It was bound to happen. An LX570 finally shows up on on Matt's Off Road Recovery channel, properly stuck deep on the frame! Wonder if they're on the boards as that LX looks to have had some good adventure miles.

Really love the channel for all its genuine drama and off-road goodness. Great learning to be had. If you're gonna off-road, your gonna get stuck sometime or another. I want a t-shirt. I think I know how to get one.

I posted the same thread and deleted it.

I'm pretty sure if they had more experience and used all the LX's features they could have gotten out of that,.

I wonder how effective crawl control would have been in that situation. I've seen other videos on youtube where it can drive you out of being stuck in sand. But these guys were up to the frame without much weight on the tires so they would have had to help it in some way, probably by injecting sand or some other material under the tires.

They surely paid more for the rescue than the basic recovery gear necessary to self-extract would have cost. A shovel, trax, toss in the dynamic rope too. Tires also looked fully inflated to me.

At least they tried the lid off their cargo box. That was a good idea.

It's possible if they used it early enough before really digging in that it could have gotten them out. The LX even has another party trick with extra high mode going to a full 3" lift when detecting stucks.

The way they were situated when rescue came, they were surely high centered with little recourse. From the looks of the tire gap to the fender, at all 4 tires, the suspension was pegged out at full droop. Looks like they tried some good things by digging sand out ahead of the tires. Also using gravity with the cargo box lid to help go backwards downhill.

I'm trying to guess what tires they have on there. Could be a KO2 in 275/55R20?

With proper tire pressure and CRAWL it is pretty much impossible to get stuck on sand unless you are high centered. I have driven the softest sand and tried to intentionally get it stuck and it will just "crawl" right out. Doesn't matter what vehicle you have, if you have four wheels spinning (with lockers or abs) you will get unstuck. Just air down and don't drive with wheels larger than 17"

The LX is supposed to raise itself an extra 1” over High when it senses it’s stuck. Not sure those dudes knew that.

Haven't had the chance to try crawl control in sand, but in snow, it is utterly and completely useless. Tried it on three occasions with zero progress in each case. Shovel did the trick in two cases, shovel and maxtrax in the third.

The guys in the video could have easily gotten out with a shovel and lowering their tire pressure.

"OK Rudy, you're going to put it extra high mode and engage crawl control." -Matt

Different thought since I haven’t really seen it mentioned—But my eyes suck, so forgive me if it has been here—

In my NON-EXPERT experience, you can easily encounter 5 or 10 different types of “sand” in a single “sandy” outing, so it’s worth thinking about...getting out...checking it out...and deciding before just assuming that The YouTubes = no problems, cuz crawl control. :hillbilly:

Miracles in one “sand” scenario doesn’t mean it can magically solve others.
Those guys maybe had more options, but... Sand isn’t just “sand.”

Ask any downhill skier whether “Snow is just snow” or a Louisianan whether mud is just mud. Huge differences. “Sand” might mean presence of dirt or not, moisture or no, compressible or not, clingy/sticky or not, and on and on. Same with rocks/pebbles.

Get out and step around. Even walking changes big time—Some you can easily walk on & over...but with others, your feet literally sink and submerge into it, or send little cascades of sand “sloshing g” down hill with each step.

Same with puddles and hidden muck with a harmless looking top. Some have hard pack below, and others may hide the slow death of chocolate pudding. Ask me how I know. Or ask @kreiten ’s brother about “puddles” in Moab. ;)

That sand is very different. Used to live in southern UT (Parowan), and it's not like beach sand. It has a completely different texture, like ball bearings. If you get out in the morning and it's cold and damp, its actually pretty hard and drivable. Once it's been disturbed or dry...it's like powder.
