What started as a replace the radiator only job, has turned in to a “replace everything” job. Once the upper hose came off, the metal was so incredibly corroded I determined to just go all the way. All parts were so bad, I questioned how it was even working, and leak free at that. I’ve ordered all new parts, but cannot find a new lower housing. Are those gone? Are there after market options or should I just clean this old one up? And, the two sensors that are on the lower housing. Anyone know what they are named / part numbers and if they are available? And, torque specs for thermostat housing to block and the 4 bolts on the top of the housing - anyone know those?

within the last few weeks someone posted up replacement for the lower with the sensor holes
here it is:

I bet if you soaked them in CLR for a day or so then wire wheeled them they'd clean up pretty good.
 ✌️

From what I can see in these pics, those housing halves are totally serviceable. Clean the ugly off and drive on.

Replace the upper housing.
The thermostat rubber sealing ring that seals the top of the thermostat to the upper housing requires a smooth contact surface on the upper housing to make a tight seal.
No matter how much you clean it up, the sealing groove in the upper housing is so corroded and pitted that the rubber ring won’t be able to make a nice seal.

CityRacer has these (I think).

Not really. It requires a "smooth-ish" surface. It is rubber. It is compressed between the thermostat and the housing. It will seal just fine *if* the surface is less than optimum. *If* there is a minuscule amount of coolant seeping past between the seal and the housing surface, that is really irrelevant anyway if it is not full pass through. If need be, a very badly etched surface can be reconditioned with a bit of epoxy. Or simply use a bit (not a lot) of good quality sealant/adhesive between the upper housing and the rubber seal prior to installation.

From what *I* see in the pics, that is the crud covered seal that is still in the upper housing. I personally can not discern the condition of the aluminum surface underneath it. Even if it is in fact the housing surface, there are such a large amounts of deposit on it that I would not guess the condition until that is all cleaned off.

Most of the "corrosion" in the pics is additional material that has developed/accumulated, rather than erosion and removal of the original underlying aluminum.

I cleaned it up and not much surface left at all. I ordered a new one from Rust Farmers. I ordered a new Toyota upper. There is little trim to create a good seal. 39 years was a good run I guess.

Okay NOW I see crazy corrosion ;)

I'd throw that as far and as fast as I could too!

If you can wait until Monday, 29th April, I have a servicable one I just pulled off with the sensors I'm happy to part ways with. Let me know if that timeframe works for you and if so, I'll PM some pictures on Monday.

Cheers, James

I really appreciate the offer, but I have sourced everything now. Save it for the next guy! Surely someone will be in the same situation.

Your old ones would work, but good to order from TRF while available. IMHO they are better than OE. Really nice reproduction casting and machining. I ordered one, but will order another when the main production arrives. TRF has a small amount available now, for others who may need sooner.

Sell your old ones if you don't want to keep them. Someone on a tight budget might need it.

I’m impatient - they appear to be taking pre-orders only.
I think I bought mine restored from Cruiser Matt.. It looked great. If you'd told me it was new old stock, I'd probably believe you.
