The Spicer ones are manufactured in Japan. I'd be interested to know where the eBay ones are made.

Sellers tells me TAIWAN, that sounds good enough for a trial of them, especially 2 tops and 2 bottoms for $100 delivered.................can't go wrong?

Don't you mean 2 bottoms for 100 bucks delivered? 2 tops - you can't replace just upper ball joints. I know I had to replace the upper control arms last month $$$$.

How are the guys in AU doing it?

No I mean 2 tops and 2 bottoms delivered anywhere in the world for $100USD. My link is in my previous post. I expect you can replace the uppers, especially if they are available, I think MR Toyota just doesn't sell them.

If you've still got the old uppers Martin, what happens if you remove this c-clip?

I'll let you know soon. I took the arms over to willc's garage tonight - we are going to press them out next week at the same time I press my lower ball joints out. If they come out clean - I'm going to order up the upper ball joints that are selling on ebay - heck for what - $48 bucks it would be great to have a trail spare. I wouldn't run it long term - I wouldn't trust them for long term wheeling - especially in light of what happened to Taco Blanco this past weekend. Not sure of the quality of the upper ball joint replacements. :meh:

I think the I have tracked down a part # for the Upper Ball Joint ...

It's a Federal-Mogul/Moog #K500018

Does it look like a match ?

Lists as the Upper Ball Joint for GX470 03-07/ 4Runner 03-09 / and FJ 07-09

Federal-Mogul Parts detail and construction details. These look like good units to me and would be a better bet than Taiwan-sourced ebay parts. The tech papers also had some good info on inspecting the joints.

The ebay listings in posts above are the same part # that they are selling in Australia for the Prado. That's the 100->120 connection. It makes sense from a Toyota development perspective.

Just get Utahfj62 to buy one and see if it fits/measures up the same. Now you need to find a Federal-Mogul/Moog for the lower to match.

Greasable?!

since we may be close to rebuilding our upper and lower arms, has anyone found where replacement bushings can be found? I would like to replace those too if I had everything off and was replacing the ball joints.

Thanks

I think Federal(or someone else) does the bushes as well, I have seen them somewhere, top bushes were $50 pair and bottom about $50 each I think, could be wrong..............

I think Toyota sells the bushings. Bushing replacement is in the FSM. Cruiser Dan would know.

latest on upper and lower ball joints

Is it official that the Spicer lower ball joints work? If so, how/where can they be purchased?

Also with the uppers, was it a successful removal with the c-clip removed? DId the Federal Mogul replacements fit?

Thanks

Yep - I pressed the spicer joints into the lower arms about 2 weeks ago. They fit great and are good quality - the ones I found are made by Three Five - in Japan - they make good stuff.

The only issue I had was that I had to remove the boot on the new ball joint to get a good surface to press it into the lower arm - then once in I put the boot back on. Had to be careful not to tear the new boot - which wasn't too difficult. They seat into the arms very well. I've had no issues and the front end of my truck feels tighter. There was about 1 inch of play on the driver side and 3/4 inch of play on passenger side.

I ordered the spicer joints from rockauto.com - but these raybestos joints came. I was fine with the change - actually seemed like an upgrade after I saw they were Three Five.

No photos of my upper arms - but i removed the c-clip and think the ball joints could be pressed right out. I have not ordered any replacement ball joints since I purchased complete new upper control arms when I replaced them. However if you can find comparable upper ball joints that fit - I believe there is no reason they wouldn't work - at least once.
