Does anyone know how many gallons of gas are left when the low gas light turns on in a 97 fzj80

roughly 5

no idea... but I have a 38Gal Tank... I am hoping someone chimes in .. it would be nice to know!!

If I had a tank that large I would have to fill it at the halfway mark just to try and fool myself into thinking I wasn't spending a fortune in gas! $120 or so to fill up?

Four gallons in my 80 until it dies of starvation IME. Mileage you'll get depends on driving conditions.

Depends on where you start counting, so to speak; the light will glow on and off intermittantly depending if you are accelerating or going up or down a grade for about a gallon's worth until it stays on solid orange. Once that happens, about three usable gallons.

You could test out how many miles you can get (if that is your purpose) once the orange light starts to glow; put an aux container of gas on the vehicle. Then head out on the road until the engine sputters.
Some say it is bad for the fuel pump to run out as well as the cats; don't know much about that.

Report back how far you went; hint; make sure that there is a gas station within range of what extra gas you are carrying.

(Disclaimer: use only a proper gasoline container that is approved for that purpose and only if allowed by state and local ordinances)

i know i drive my 91 till it stops blinking on and off and it usually take right at 20 gallons, so 5 gallons or less from that point

So that would mean more than 70 miles on a gas light before death by thirst? Pretty decent compared to other cars I drove.

That depends on your mileage. I usually allow for 50 miles, but once ran out in 40 while descending a steep grade. I coasted to the bottom and then she fired right back up... The fuel moved away from the pickup...

I get 16-17mpg hwy depending how fast I am speeding. I have run it dry, not on purpose, but because I was deep in thought, tired, in heavy traffic etc, and missed the exit that I planned on stopping at to fill up.

The most I got, at 70mph after the orange light went solid orange, on a level highway, was approximately 65 miles (for me that would be 4 gallons). It stalled, I put it in neutral and coasted as far as I could. Then pulled over, started her again, got up to about 50mph, and she died again; coasted, repeated this about 3 times total, and got as far as the off ramp of the next exit; only had to walk 1/4 mile to get gas; lucky. Probably not good for the engine, but I didn't feel like walking a couple of miles in at night in the rain.

Point is, I figure three usable gallons (max) or about 45 hwy miles max (less if city) once the orange light is solid, unless I want to walk.

Usually about 5 gallons left when my light goes on.

you poor yanks your petrols are so thirsty I get 13 ltrs to the 100 km over here with my 1hd-ft and about 15 when I'm pushing it.

Lost in translation:flipoff2:

Reminds me of a funny story,
I was driving with 3 other people in the car, two dogs, and luggage for about a week. Pretty well loaded. On a dark mountain road about an hour from everywhere... I had passed a fuel station about an hour before and thought, "I should fuel up"... but wanted to get to where we were going before dark (didn't).

Anyway, I casually mention to the others in the car that we might not have all that much fuel left, and that we were pretty sure to make it to where we were going. They were all a little worried, but not too much.

So after cruising along this way for a while, the light came on and my (typical) reaction was
"Cool! I didn't know I had a low-fuel light! This is great :) "

My wife says "Hey, that is cool!"

My buddy in the back seat comes back with: "Steve, you're the only person I've ever met who is actually excited to see their low-fuel light when they are in the middle of nowhere. And Jocelyn, you're just as crazy as he is".

Maybe it was funnier in person, but it cracked me up at the time. I couldn't get him to see that because the light came on, I figured that we weren't actually as empty as I thought (the needle was on E) and that we probably had at least 15 liters of fuel, which is more than enough to go 100km (I usually burn 11 or 12 liters per 100km, which is around 22 or 23 mpg). We were only 40 or 50 km from a city....

The "almost-empty" light doesn't work on mine. I just found out the hard way! My wife borrowed the 80 for a couple of days, but I think she was afraid to stop at the gas station.

The AAA tow truck guy sold me a little over a gallon for $5. I went straight to the gas station and pumped 23.95 gallons of unleaded 87 for a whopping $76. This is the first time ever that I run out of gas and the first time ever that I spend so much on a single fill up.

Anyone know if the problem might be something else other than the light itself? A fuse, a switch, a sensor?

Don't know about the sensor, but I have filled up with 25 gallons before:doh: The 80 has a 25.1 gallon capacity.
