What causes the low fuel light to come on? Mine has been coming on randomly (regardless of fuel level). Sometimes dimly lit, other times brightly. The fuel gauge is functioning normally.

Any ideas?!

There is a sensor incorporated in the fuel sending unit that may be malfunctioning. If it is the sensor, the repair would be to replace the sending unit.

This also sounds like a poorly grounded connection. I don't have a wiring diagram in front of me but if mine behaved that way I'd check the points where the sender is grounded, or picking up the ground. Drive through any water recently?

Low fuel light fixed!

I finally got the chance to pull the inspection plate last night. Found one loose connection!
Problem fixed.

Thanks

I know this is an old post, but my low-fuel light just started doing this same thing. Is the "inspection plate" that was mentioned a reference to the plate under the second-row seats which provides access to the fuel sending unit? Is that where the loose connection was?

Reviving this one from the dead. My truck just started this. Mud is the $h!t !!
Probably needs the sensor replaced but mine started doing it and I ran some Techron fuel cleaner and it stopped. Could be worth trying if it's a possible contamination issue.
