Howdy

just picked up an unknown cruiser and was lately driving it, 1984 fj60

had been sitting for about a year so i gave it a tuneup- oil, plugs, fuel filter, new dist with cap, she fired right up and i thought we would begin our new life together happily

however...

going about 20 mph, heard a large boom, thought a gun shot had gone off, or else the loudest backfire i have ever heard. was in 2nd gear, was not accelerating at the time

pulled over immediately as white smoke began pouring out the tailpipe.

clacking noise but not too severe from the engine.

is this an exahust valve? back pressure from a stuck valve that suddenly boomed out, not the head gasket, doesnt seem to be any water or oil mixed,

the noise was too loud for soemthing ordinary and the white smoke is definetly not right.

towed it home and will be looking at it in depth over the weekend.

thanks for the advice

White smoke is coolant, so my guess is you have a blow head gasket.

If there is white smoke coming out of your tailpipe that leads me to believe a head gasket is needed.

How many miles on the rig?

only 138k, never heard of a head gasket blowing and making noise

as of right now, no oil or water mixing that is apparent anywhere

no blown hoses

I'd pop the valve cover off and take a look at the valve-train. Check for bent pushrods/ rockers. Then try and isolate the noise so you can tell where its coming from more clearly.

poppin the valve cover this wknd, im pretty sure its the valves, only smokes when i hold the gas, idling or when downshifting no smoke, coming to stop light, idling up in gear not much smoke, hit the clutch to accelerate and smoke comes out the tailpipe a BUNCH

still no oil in water anywhre i can tell is mixed, AND

the dam thing still runs like a CHAMP, just doesnt seem to add all up to me????????

hgs can go several ways.
if it popped between the water jacket and a cylinder only, you will not get oil in the water....just in the cylinder.....which it sounds like you very clearly have.

my 3f troopy has just done a head gasket.
no water in oil anywhere
once a week it would backfire loudly, white smoke when cold in the morning.
hard to start once or twice(hydraulic lock)
slight miss when running
i think mines been leaking for months

i have dealt with backfires before on old chevy bb engines that were cold or running rich but NEVER heard a backfire this loud,

is that what i heard? i swear to yall it was a shotgun under my seat i thought i blew something out of the engine block it was so loud.
