Rewind to 2017 when I had a triple locked '95. I needed a bigger truck and found myself driving on the road way more than off, so I sold it to a friend and bought an '06 Sequoia. Life changes, ya know? I no longer need a big dumb farm animal and wanted to get back into an 80 but the prices are just stupid. In talking with my friend whom I sold my 80 to, he asked if I'd like to buy it back because he barely uses it and has some home renovations on the short list he needs a couple bucks to accomplish.

Since 2017, he's done BIOR bumpers and sliders, over the frame exhaust, OME 850/860 springs, completely sound deadened the entire body, did an incredibly extensive rebuild of the engine (it has about 25k since rebuild), regeared with 5.13s (I wasn't aware this ratio was available for the 80...?), replaced all the suspension bushings with OEM rubber, fixed some body rust, dry ice blasted the undercarriage, threw on some Method wheels with 35x12,50x17 Yoko Geolandar MT003s, and the one part that would have been a deal breaker for me had it not been for the sore dick deal of a price, is that he rhino lined the entire thing in a sky/baby blue color. Ugh. But because the ask was less than half of what he's put into the thing in parts alone, I couldn't beat it so I jumped on it.

The bad part? BHG. But it's only mixing coolant and oil in the crank case, never overheated, and has good compression numbers, so I'm not too worried about it. I'll throw an OEM HG and head bolts at it and call it good.

I told my wife that for my entire life, I've made it a point to never get back with an ex, but I haven't stopped bitching about the IFS in the Sequoia since I got rid of the 80 way back when. I guess now I can bitch about lack of power and cup holders. :flipoff2:

It's Rhino Liner and I don't know the exact code, but I think it's just called Light Blue.

Having an 80, 100, tundra and sequoia that I am driving around and gotta say the only one I really like is the 80. not that I can't appreciate the others for what they are, more comfortable, better fuel efficiency, faster etc. Just isn't what does it for me. Hopefully the primitive nature of the 79 pickup I am hoping to have on the road soon, will be uncomfortable enough that I will enjoy it.

That's not a color I would have chosen, but it's not too bad. I hadn't looked at the pic yet reading the text, and by your description I was expecting a super light powder blue. I could live with it, especially considering everything else that's been done.

Congrats.

I'd definitely take any of my ex-80s back.

And if I had an ex-40, I'd take that back too. I still kick myself for the 40 that got away, original owner, 60 miles, great backstory, ran great, he only wanted $7k, but I didn't have the money at the time. The one that got away...

I've seen Rhino Liner sprayed over Rhino Liner to repair trail damage. I don't see why you couldn't just hit it with a coat of another color. Problem solved. Or just embrace the uniqueness!

Make it look like a JAF rig:

Are you positive its a blown head gasket and not an oil cooler leak? Seems odd it would have a blown head gasket with so little miles on a rebuild, if done correctly.

Considering that I usually don’t care for any vehicle that has been rhino lined, it’s a good looking truck!
Hope it serves you well for years to come.

That's all mostly how I feel. It's not a show truck by any means, and were it not tastefully modded and cared for by someone whom I'd trust to work on my own stuff (that's a pretty high bar), the color and/or liner would have been a deal breaker for me. The up side is that I won't have to worry about trail applied pin stripes any more.

I hadn't thought of that. He did say he replaced the cooler with an OEM unit and all gaskets were OEM as well. The shop he sent the block and head off to was the one that reassembled the engine. I looked in the radiator and coolant reservoir and there isn't any oil in the coolant. It's been my experience with faulty oil coolers that they generally mix in the radiator because the oil is under higher pressure than the coolant system. But you do bring up a very good point. Before I pull the head, I'll get the cooler out and pressure test it.

I think that'd look great, though I think I'd do the whole roof in white too, just for the improved heat reflection.

Funny you mention that. My wife was fooling around with AI photoshopping and came up with this. She couldn't get it to leave the roof blue, nor could she get the white to follow the body line down to the bottom of the turn signal, but... I am liking this a LOT more than the solid color.

Looks sharp, and I think you'd notice the difference on a hot day. Anything heat your A/C doesn't have to contend with is a bonus.

Do you think it'd make that much of a difference? I'm not opposed to a white roof if I go that route; just wondering if it'd really change much temperature wise.

There's a thread on here somewhere about guys repainting their roofs white for that specific reason. They seemed to think it helped. Hard to quantify, since every day is a little different. Also, you might look for the "Official two tone thread" which has a bunch of different version of two tone color schemes, some in paint, some photoshopped.

Just change the oil more frequently. Use the cheapest stuff you can find, and change it every 1000. Coolant or water in oil, significantly changes the properties of the oil. Use something with a high TBN like Supertech Diesel oil or Delvac 1300, or even Providence 5w40 found for 80 bucks at Rural king.

I was in Qatar (land crusier heaven, by the way) for while and the vast majority of vehicles are white. I asked the sales guy at the Toyota dealer and he said it was because they stay cooler. He said all of the base spec were white and that he only rarely sells one in a color other than white, typically a high spec vehicle. Anecdotal, I know, but at least another data point to support the white roof idea.

I really like that two tone you have photoshopped. i'd rock that paint job.
