Looking to do and learn the birf job, can anyone lend a hand in NY/NJ?

Hey guys, I just ordered Dan's Birf kit and would really like to learn to do this job. I have a wheel clicking on my rightside so it's time. Anyone in the NY/NJ or even CT area willing to lend a helping hand? I can travel. I live on Long Island and would just like to learn to do this the proper way. I realize it's a big job but maybe we can have a tri-state area Birf party. Any takers? Obvi the beers on me.

Did you read the Front Axle rebuild thread in the FAQ? That should help.

...

I've read it a bunch of times. I guess I don't trust myself and working as an apprentence with a seasoned Cruiser guy would help. I installed my own lift but I see this as being a lot tougher. I have a guy I can pay but I'd like to learn it.

If this was last week, I could have easily helped you out as I was in Wantagh....I even had some extra seals and my tools with me....

Good luck.

I grew up in Bellmore, right next door. :grinpimp:

LI: I'd be willing, but don't have much time in the next month or so...weekends are at quite the premium these days. I've only done this once, but would be willing to give you whatever help I'm able to via phone if you need it. PM me if you can't get any "live" help.

Hey Ken,

I've been thinking about doing mine. I read the rebuild thread, but you wrote it and your less than 10 miles from me. I'll buy cigars if you want to help.

You have access to a garage?

I'm temporarily without job ("in transition" for you hoity-toity types) and have some free time and I used to live in Bohemia. I'd have to run it by the wife but I think it's doable. In fact if you have a 2 stall garage I can offer assistance while I replace the rear seal in my x-fer case. Kind of like the the Birf party you mentioned.

Does anyone have a picture of what the Birf looks like?

Thanks for the pictures. Matches what I've seen under my 80' Truck in shop with 80' guru now and hoping everything checks out.

Just bought my 1st 80 a month ago so looking forward to doing more of this myself.

Dave

IBCRUSN,

Are you still in Jersey?

Sent PM, don't want to hijack a perfectly good thread.

I got a 3 car garage just 1/2 hour north of Albany. Now that could be a birf party!

Thank

Pdoyle, thats sounds like an event and I'd be down but I'll have a keg in tow. Thanks for all your responses guys, it awesome to see so many willing people. IB, the NJ shore is easy for me but I don't have a garage, I'm a driveway mechanic. If anyone else has any suggestions then I'm all ears. I'm ordering Jim's DVD and I guess I'll decide then what to do. There is a guy on LI called RMS offroad, he claims he know the Birf extremely well. Anybody heard of this guy. He has a very established 4 wheel shop. Thanks again to everyone and if a birf party is a serious thing then I'd drive any where for it. Thanks

Stay away from RMS unless you have deep pockets. I have only heard from a few Jeep guys, one of which is a buddy and they all said his prices were high and labor even higher.

Outdoors would be ok so far as the weather was good and there was some shade.

....

I called RMS just to see. He told me 500 or so for labor. I'd rather do it myself so I can learn about it. My driveway is gravel but card board usually helps that

LI, too bad I'm so far away! anyway, the project isn't that bad, just messy. Get some plastic, and have some old tshirts at the ready. I need to do a repack
on my 80 pretty soon too. BUT, I am supposed to receive an OME 2 1/2 " lift kit from Slee, by UPS this afternoon! That is first on my list!!!

Once watching this DVD (which I just ordered) I think I'll get a better grasp on what it takes.
