So a little after a year of ownership I began to get this like metal on metal rubbing sound from the passenger side - maybe passenger rear - hard to tell. When the truck is uneven on the right side, lets say that the driver side is higher and on pavement on the passenger side is lower and off-road, the truck sounds like the exhaust is coming off. Of course it doesnt happen all the time. Also, after city driving for a bit the hitting some bumps, more lateral move then an up and down, Ii get a high pitched squeak.... Ive removed the spare bc the dealer has told me its the wheel moving in the storage spot. That did not make a difference - I still hear the noises when the spare is removed. Its locked tight in place and the chain is also secured.

In trying to still figure this out, over the weekend I pushed the car from right below the side roof rack to rock it and heard this loud squeaking from the engine compartment - different noise from above. Guessing shock related. So I called the dealer to ask them some question on lubing , etc during services - I now have about45k miles and up to date. They told ne they lube the car according to the manual but would not provide me with a list or the like. In looking in the maintenance book I saw no where under normal maintenance where any lubing is called for. Am I missing something? Can anyone put up a schedule on what's lubed, etc. for me? Or tell me where to look? All I see in the maintenance log is to lube the propeller shaft.

I also called a Lexus dealer to see if I could have them take a stab at it. They said they would not service a Toyota - only Lexus.

Borrow or buy a set of Steelman Chassis Ears. They're great for isolating the source of noises. The wired version runs about $100.

Could it be the middle row seats? They have been known to latch with play. Some use tape around the latch anchors. Others use a towel or foam underneath the seats.

I had this happen recently. I knew it was coming from the middle row. I tried shaking the seats and putting my weight on them and it didn't really help. Eventually, it went away on it's own. Not sure why. Thanks for the tips!

The Toyota owners web site has links to the maintenance manual for needed service at each interval. The only grease fittings are on the propeller shafts.

Sometimes small stones get caught in the brake shields and make intermittent sounds like you describe. Take a flashlight and look carefully at the shields.

That’s all I saw were the shafts too. The service dept has told me they grease chassis, etc but can’t tell me what or where. I think there full of it. How would they not know what they are greasing?

Not sure what the brake shields are. But I’ll look and try to figure it out. Can’t imagine a stone in there for almost 3 years causing a squeak. But who knows…. Tks

I’ve pulled, yanked and drove with the seats in the folded position and while I’ve heard no noise while pulling and yanking I did still hear it with the seats up and driving around.

Not sure how this would work. I looked at a wireless unit. I guess one would have to start somewhere with the clip and by process of elimination just keep moving closer to the source?

Correct.

There are multiple mics, so you can place all of them in the general area that you think the sound might be originating from. You turn a switch dial to select the various mics as you recreate the noise. Then you can move the mics around as you narrrow in on the source.

Wireless would be nice, but the wired version works well. I just wasn't willing to spend that much on a tool I would use infrequently as a hobbyist.

As long as you use appropriate caution, you can drive around with them attached. This has helped several 'mudders isolate the source of hard to locate sounds (wheel bearings, gears, etc.).

They're a very effective tool.

Some service advisors have little idea what actually happens in the service bays.

The brake shield is a metal plate that is just behind the rotor. Here is what one looks like. I didn’t know the problem has been there for 3 years. Probably not a stone then. Stones find there way in and out and while stuck between the shield and caliper they can cause odd noises.

Ahh. Didn’t know what that was called. Tks for the link. This sound sounds more like hollow metallic noise. Like a long pice of metal bending scraping and the noise is being transmitted through the part. The 1st time I heard it I actually pulled off the road to look under the car - I thought I had run over something and that it was dragging underneath the car. Weird. Then I thought exhaust, exhaust bracket related. As it happens when the truck is being flexed, uneven if you will. Annoying and exhausting……. Quite a mystery.

I have yet to meet a service advisor that really understands the 200. At least here, they are just too low volume. And I wish it was just the rarity of the 200 - I've had very common Toyotas and Fords where the service advisors were all just glorified paper pushers and up-sellers. Poor dealership experiences are the main reason why I do as much of my own work as possible now (most everything but windshields, alignments and tires). The other is cost, but even when I'd be ahead of the game having the dealer work on the 200, I don't feel like they can be trusted. On the other hand, we have a trusted mechanic (and friend) who we take my daughter's Volvo to - a former Volvo dealership master tech - he takes the time to diagnose and make necessary repairs, doesn't upsell dishonestly, etc. He doesn't just swap parts hoping to get what is broken. I gladly pay for his hard earned expertise and parts markup - because he runs an honest business. I wish I could find someone like that that knows the 200 well.

Just about every dealer around here sucks. The last hold out was the Porsche dealer. I thought they were ok…. But finally had to say good bye bc they stopped using Vaseline and it stated to hurt too much.

Very likely it is the top of the rear shock. Check it has tightened down all the way. If this is the issue you may need a rubber/silicon washer spacer to get it tightened down. Just FYI ARB's BP51 shock kit have this issue.

Tks much. If you don’t mind….. will it have to be on a lift to check? I do basics, but the rest is kinda hunt and peck. Don’t have stands or lift here at house…. Tks again.

No you can just slide under and look, or have some one rock the vehicle and create the squeak, and then look for ANY play on the top of the rear shock.
2 wheels up on the curb even.

There was a thread on this awhile back.

ok, well the was easy - didn't even have to do it. I do not hear the noise by rocking the truck. Earlier today I latched up the rear seats to ck again - before when I have done this I still hear the high pitched squeak which is different from the loud noise I hear when half on-half off road. When yesterday I rocked the truck to try and duplicate the high pitched noise I got this loud ass noise from the driver side front side - like a rusty squeaky hinge. So now I have a bunch of troubleshooting to do....
1) rusty hinge squeak in front driver side when rocked - have been able to duplicate easy

2) popping / clicking noise passenger side front engine compartment when I put my weight onto running board while climbing / getting into driver side - comes and goes - sometimes can de duplicated.

3) high pitched squeaky noise from somewhere in rear. Cannot seem to duplicate this by rocking side to side or pushing down on tailgate or front bumper. Happens mostly, not always, during trip and over bumps that seem to move the truck laterally. Also if I come to a stop then while taking a left turn slowly while maybe over uneven road surface. Hit or miss on being able to easily duplicate.

4) loud ass weird noise when truck is 1/2 on 1/2 off road (right side of truck off road and lower than driver side). Almost like a scraping hollowish resonating sound. This is the one I thought that something was caught under the damnn truck. I have duplicated this before but the 2 times I tried to take the tech for a test drive, the dealer refused. So I gave up.

Im going to take a look at the shocks in the rear any way. If I could post Voice Memos I would. I have the popping noise and the rusty hinge sound. But I don think that would help. But at least I can play them when I go back in next week.

Maybe I should just turn off my hearing aides. Haha.

Still open to any suggestions

so poking around under the truck, nothing weird. But, its kinda like giving a scalpel to a 1st year med student and telling him to get busy with the transplant. while I am mechanically inclined, experience is lacking and I have no idea what's "normal". side by side front noise present and high pitched squeaking sporadic while driving.

This is what I would do.
1- Spray white lithium grease on the hinge.
2-locken and re-tighten running board mount bolts
3-lossen and re-tighten upper shock mount
4-i have no idea on that one.

I stuffed a pair of mountain bike gloves under the middle seats.
That solved my annoying squeaking I would hear from time to time.
