I am looking for good ideas for modifying my floor pan in my 1971 FJ40 to accept a split case. A couple years ago I installed a transmission and transfer case out of a 1981 FJ60. Everything is great except the transfer case boot does not line up. I really like the rubber FJ60 boot, but it will require me modifying the transmission tunnel to make it fit.

Before I go hacking away, does anyone have photos of their transfer case shiftier after the split case install? I would like some inspiration before I start this project.

What transmission are you running now? You say 81 FJ60 which pre dates the 10/82 start of the H55F. Yet you have a five speed shift knob. Hard to see what transfer case shifter you have now. The split case is the issue it's 60 series shifter. But looks like your using the 60 series H42 top cover. Top cover from any US market H42 FJ40 would have put the shifter forward where it should be. The 8/80+ 40 series H41/H42 would have the shifter on the transfer case that move it to the correct location. Those always had a rubber inner boot and leather outer boot. Style changed a little 10/82 when the hump and inspection cover changed. If you want a out rubber boot for the transfer case would go with a early 70 series. Those would are round other than the base and made for a more vertical shifter. The boots that the 81/82 60 series used were different. I have a set in another location but probably have a picture somewhere.

I have the short H42 out of an early FJ60. I want to say it came out of a 1981. The transfer case shifter, and shift boots are out of the same truck.

Are you saying I should swap the top plate on the transmission to move the shiftier forward? Until you said something I never noticed that it is 3" further back than the old 3-speed. At some point I want to swap in an H55f. Where is the shiftier on that transmission? Is it where my shiftier currently comes up, or 3" forward?

Ignore the shift knobs. The only knobs I had in my garage when I built the truck are out of my 1986 mini truck, so the shift pattern is wrong. I never bothered to change them, nor do I care to. :p

The shifter on a H55F depends on if it is new and used which vehicle it is from. The 40 series H55F the transmission shifter is the location as the four speed in a 40 series. Stock transfer shifter is a little further back but these are hard to find. I've been experimenting with other shifters that would move it forward.

If you go with a 60/70 series H55F probably want the transfer case shift from a later 60 series or from a 70 series.

To answer question about the four speed yes a 40 series four would fit the 60 series four speed and move the shifter very close to the three speed location. 8/80+ split case transfer case shifter from a 40 series would move to the correct location next to the transmission shift cane. If you planning on going H55F wouldn't bother worrying about your current shifter location because neither work with a H55F. The boss on the side of the H55F housing is in a different location so transfer case shifter would not work. Top cover and shift case on the H55F are different than a four speed and couldn't be used.
