(and Yes, I reworded the title after I spoke it outloud)
Long preface.
the rear part of my 75 tub is not in great shape. As soon as I have the wheels all back on, going to roll it out and remove the body and also grind on what seems to be a bondo mine. I picked up a body to a 1970 FJ 40 with my intent of using the tire rack and barn doors but this body is in fairly good shape on the rear portion (behind the driver). Here is my question and I will add a few photos for illustrative purposes.

Q: Would you seperate the rear tub from the 1970 FJ40 and place it on the 1975 FJ40? Both need rear sills.

current wheel wells have been roughly flame cut to accomodate 35s and hidden with plastic fender flares.

The 1970 tub looks original where the wheel wells in the 75 are covered with steel plate and the roll bars jury rigged with a mixture of thin walled 1" tubing, crap welds and an ungodly amount that canned expanding foam gap filler.

I have the 70 tub on its side to make room. the part that concerns me is this, the 70 tub still has the VIN tag but I do not know if someone would want the firewall back portion - it needs inner and outer rocker panels and some floor replacement as well as other structural issues.

I could also throw caution to the wind as my local FJ place has a complete aluminum replacement body for 5K. Seems expedient but who learns anything from that. There are days when I find that appealing.

Typically VIN tags stay with the frame. The frame is stamped with the VIN # on right front frame rail just behind the bumper. I'd get rid of the expandable foam. Aftermarket rear sills, 1/4s and other body parts are available, thru several vendors.

I'd use the best body and build from there. Adapt the vin tag to the new tub so the frame and tub #'s are the same. There's probably another tag somewhere under the hood. Some are on the firewall others on the rt fender.

Agreed. Use the best body and go from there with replacement sill and other patch panels. Assuming you have the skills to do the work? If all you need is a rear sill and lower quarter patches then you’re in good shape. Maybe 30-50 hours of work to do a great job of replacing those depending on your speed.
