found a very clean 97 lx450 in denver.

What are the plans. Another mall cruiser or something that will play with the big dogs?

Its gotta do both jobs, look good on the road and be a capable performer off-road. suggestions on 1st modifications?

... suggestions on 1st modifications?

The very FIRST mod should be a decent radio. See the HAM threads here and on 'Mud.

For the 80-series to be capable off-road all you need is the rotary switch and some decent tires. After that you will want some armor to protect the rockers so I recommend getting sliders first.

The next thing is some good off-road tires; all-terrains if you want to minimize noise; mud-terrains if you have already lost your hearing and don't care about the noise. 33" tires can be done with a 2-1/2" lift (OME medium). Along with the tires, you would do the lift to put some distance between your vehicle's dangling bits and the rocks. Next would be rear bumper to get some protection for these long wheelbase wagons with big butts and to get the spare out from underneath. Then the front bumper with a winch.

... and then ...

:D

Hey Mike.

What happened to the "y"?

One thing to consider. You should never ask this group for suggestions. While you will get plenty of help, and our suggestions will probably be consistent since we have all been there ... we have no problem spending other people's money.

I would suggest you do nothing right now. Come out and play with us and see what other 80 owners have done to their trucks. Talk, listen, then make decisions based on your needs and wallet.

Mikey was spot on, BTW. Radio and switch first.

WTF invited a voice of reason to this wallet raping party!!!???:lol::lol::lol::lol:

and if our area isn't enough to make you want spend money, then head to 80's tech, where your money is even more expendable and paranoia and impulse reign supreme.

x2 pappy's advice, trail com is a priority.

No need for the Rotary switch, I'd go for the tires, HAM radio and a set of sliders. The rotary switch usually produces a driver who can't read lines or the terrain. Open diff forces the driver to become a better wheeler, IMHO. An open diff 80 is a formidable vehicle if driven well.

I agree with others, go check out the Cedro wheeling this weekend, it'll be good for you.

holy crap! You guys dont waste time! just newbies cash! Yeah i will head down to abq soon and learn from the experienced bulls before buying anything. The tires are brand new 285 A/T. they'll get me started alright wont they?

Like Daisy said, those will be fine to start. Same size I started with in the 80. Just figure out what you like from there. Some of the guys go more extreme than others. Example, you can read posts from bionic and troutrunner, who look for the really big crap to crawl up and Marc who is just getting over a curb at the mall (sorry Marc, couldn't resist). Everyone has there own liking. yeah, I would say a radio would be a great help to start. Quite a few of us have been going to HAM, but some still have CB's. It really helps to listen to what is going on the trail in front of and behind you. Suprised no one brought up, but you will want to think about about other gear to, like airing up and down, recovery, etc... You have a pretty great group here to help you out with that stuff if you don't have that yet. Just get and and see what you like first.

Here is the collection of links Mikey was talking about: https://forum.ih8mud.com/nm-high-desert-cruisers/497137-collection-ham-radio-discussions.html#post6751518

My suggestion is bypass CB and jump straight to HAM. You can borrow a CB for now. This will save you from installing a CB antenna, then having to later install a HAM. Just use a portable CB/mag-mount unit for now. Getting your HAM license is child easy. And having a call sign is super cool.

KJ5RAT clear.

I thought there was another switch modification that many 80 owners do.

center diff lock button is nice to have, and it only costs you the switch since the harness and logic is already there. course it locks automatically in low range  once you have both that and the magic dial, you can lock up in 4hi too, if you ever wanted to, but he CDL switch is not a big priority, just way easier than putting in lockers.

and you asked for help in lightening your wallet, dont' be surprised how many ideas people can come up with :P

At least with the extended transmit mod (crush the diode) on the Yaesu 8800 and 7800 radios, we can communicate with regular FRS radios very nicely and everyone has FRS radios I'm sure.

Now where did I leave that video of a sage 40th getting winched up Poughkipsee a few weeks ago?

Pay attention Jonboy, the dude is selling a porch; he'll have plenty of $$$ to dump into the truck. :D

Or maybe he has a benevolent GF that will buy him a mall cruiser and take it to Christo for all the goodies a hundy could possible want or need. Ya never know.
