I know they are hard to come by and undesirable but I feel it will work well with my application. Its way lighter than a cruiser.

I'm putting a cummins 3.3 in a mini truck and there are adapters out there that will bolt this tranny straight to the 3.3.

I know you can get these from the turbo minis but the input shaft length is 6.5" instead of 7.5" in the later versions.

I also want the r151 with the offset lc tcase. I'm planning on putting a set of elocker axles from an 80 under the truck. So I need the offset tcase.

Willing to travel or pay for shipping....
 
I think there were some for sale in Billings MT. check craigslist. no transfer cases.
 
had a look at billings site but didn't see any...another member on this board might have already gotten them. I just read another post about it

he had 4 trans, they were listed maybe a month ago again.
try DanHJ45 may have contact info as he is the one that picked the engine and 1 trans up.
 
what about a R141? (4 speed). i have a used one sitting here for cheap.
the R141 has lower gears than the R151, perfect for off road but on highway you are stuck with 1-1 final. i am runing one in my bush pig and love it. think H41 (not the H42) and you have the same gearing (or the H55F without O/D)

Really? You mean they don't answer Wayne Smiths emails???? The Nerve! I usually call businesses on the phone - old school communication, they always answer and I've talked to them many times, parts arrive very quickly and I've always been happy doing business with them. Emails get thrown into spam and are never seen - phone is direct.

The R151 they make has all chomoly shafts and they add a reinforced brace that causes the premature wear and breakdown of the R151 - the major complaint about the R151 running behind a more powerful engine. They claim their 151's are running with 1000 hp engine and they never get a return. I don't have one yet as I am getting one from DanHJ45 - then will send out one I have here for rebuild. I still like the R151 better than the H55f - nice shifting and haven't thrashed it yet - but it does make alot of rattling noise.
 
tell yah what, you go with the marlin "we make the best" and i will go with the new Toyota one.

as you can tell, i am not into the "newest, latest, greatest" gagets.

curious, the chrome moly birfs are not recommended in the 80 series cause they wear out at roughly 50K... which leads to the question, why would chrome moly guts in a tranny last longer?

to take a R151 and add this fancy brace and you should be golden... no?

<yah, the nerve. i wanted to do a double behind a 373 auto... nothing. so in the end, they didn't reply and they didn't recieve any of my cash i wanted to give them. lose / lose.>

Unfortunatley I need something with fifth gear. The cummins is redlines at 2800 so I need all the help I could get other wise I would scoop up your 141.

I've talked to marlin about building the r151 I need...however they were suppose to get back to me with details and never did.
From what dave told me you can't swap imput shafts b/c of the low 1st gear of the 151. You can do it with the 150. I really need a ax15 imput shaft swapped in b/c its the right length and spline.


Now for the long winded version of what I'm trying to do.

I'm sure some of you know that the ax15 and r150/151 are almost identical except for a couple internal parts and the imput shafts

Currently phoniex does not make any adapters for the b3.3 to toyota. But they do make them for the dodge ax15. So You can bolt a dodge bellhousing (which I have) to the r151 trans (which I have but needs rebuilding)

I just wanted to see if the newer r151's in the cruisers have a 7.5" input shaft like the newer r150 have in the tacomas/4runner. Anyone that know please chime in.

So that leaves the tcase...I have the mini tacase also.

So the best route I can see right now is to get the r150 tacoma trans, buy the adapter from marlin to bolt the 23 spline gear case to it and everything should work in theory.

However...I'm pretty sure I just scored a set of 80 elocker axles for cheap. So I was going to put those under the truck and then I would need a r151 and split tcase. I have a split tcase also but I'm not sure how it adapts to the 151.

Cool...it seems I've started a pissing match this morning.

Not to take sides but for $200 dollars more I can get a new from toyota r151. The only reason I was considering marlin was b/c I would have needed the input shafts changed.

The r151 was desinged for a 130 hp application. The one I have lasted over 200k with no problems. I'm putting it behind a motor that will make 120hp and close to 300 ft/lbs at best. So I don't really think I gonna gave to many problems with it lasting.


As far as I know the r151 brace your talking about it just the front bearing retainer.

Wayne do you happen to know how th r151 bolts to the split case? I've never seen this combo in person.
 
i have a brand new R151 sitting here so i can take pics later and measure the shaft sticking out the front.
no pissing match, Louis and I get along fine. he likes the "latest greatest" and i like tried and true. he is a young buck and i am an old fart.

i am sure when the cavemen where through bopping their women on the head and sitting around the fire afterwards they discuss hunting tech. MUD is our fire pit and the women are busy with Saturday morning housework so the men discuss the latest mods.

When that new tranny has 150,000 -250,000 kms on it I want to go for a drive in it please - lol, it will be rattling for sure - and yes the brace does make the difference. The weak brace in the stock box allows for wear, once it wears the gear sets can move, once they move everything starts to go. Search the forums overseas and educate yourself on this one

I want to try marlin because it is known that the stock tranny wears prematurely behind the 1HZ, the marlin would be an experiment for me, I suspect it would outlast the stock mainly because of the extra bracing. If they can't install the input shaft because of first gear I think they can change the first gear anyway?

I guess if you go with a new R151 from toyota knowing that you would have to replace it at 250 k kms then that is ok. In ontario that is usually the life of a vehicle anyway.

IIRC they said chromoly shafts - not sure about the wear though, I know the chromoly birfs wear and aren't for DD, so don't know how that affects shaft wear - or if I messed up what they told me.

I know what you mean about not getting a call back though - irritating and I have not done business with many people for the same reason.
 
No pissing match here, I like tried and true as well, but I've always said that this truck is an experiment for me so I don't mind wasting some cash to see how things work. That thing is the front bearing retainer - I'm told thats where the problems begin. With the 1HZ-TI my worry is about the shock loading when wheeling - I'm hard on my trucks so I just don't want to break down in the bush - thats my main concern. That being said this original r151 in my truck (original to me) was rattling when I got it and I have pounded the piss out of it - making alot more rattling noise now but no grinding and still holding on until I get my other box. I'm still on the fence about marlin and stock toyota - I flip flop on this one, I would like to buy a stock box and try the bracket install but then I'd be into big bucks and potentially the same problem.

Wayne, nice to know I am a young buck! Just turning 40 here, aren't you 50? You look alot older:) Funny thing is that we both got into cruisers at the same time - I bought my first when I was 16 years old after watching a national geographic show on TV - biggest piece of s*** I ever owned - but never left me stranded.
 
now, we have experienced the R151 and R141 from the mine industry beat to s*** trucks but what about the PZ with the R151? what have we seen in Japan?

as for go for a drive after 250,000 km??? buddy, i get bored of a vehicle at 20,000 km.
 
Yeah I could tell it was friendly bickering...

I must be the really young buck then at 30....but everyone tells me I'm old far beyond my time. I'm a dinasour compared to most kids my age. I've been driving and wrenching on yota's and cruisers since before I was legal age to drive. My infactuation with cruisers came from spending alot of time out of the country and driving and oogling over the trucks that toyota thought we didn't need in north america.

lshobie...from what dave at marlin told me they can use the ax15 internal and input shaft and put the r151 tailhousing on it. This would give me the right length imput shaft. However there's really no way in hell I could live with a jeep tranny in a toyota. After some reasearch I found that marlin was quoted in saying you can swap input shafts in the r150 and the ax15 b/c the first gear is not as low as the r151. But whats the point when you can just buy a late model r150 with the right length.

Wayne...I'll send you an reminder email. Thanks for the help. I just like to find out something conclusive so I can figure out what is the best route to take with this all.

I should just be patient b/c rumor has it that phoniex is gonna start making adapters for the b3.3 to 1hz bellhousing pattern. Supposedly starting production early next year.
 
Hey wayne, my 1HZ/tranny/transfer just arrived into Montreal comes here on monday. Going to do some upgrades on this one, going to send most of it away for HPC coatings - another experiment.

wayne - you get bored with the vehicle before you even get it shipped over from Japan (or off the trailer after hauling back from BC)

as far as test drives of high mileage trucks - my 96 has 306,000 miles / 490,000 km on it if I ever get it up here....

I can save you the trouble. Mine is pretty well spoken for. As soon as I can figure out how to ship this thing a few thousand KMs it's gone.

That said, if the buyer backs out or something, then I will put it up for sale here ASAP (I highly doubt that will happen). I've got no use for it, and it just needs to leave my shop.

I could possibly round up the phone number of the guy in Billings who sold it though, he had 3 others and I don't know what happened with them. (this was 1 or 2 months ago).
