I bought my 70 disc/full float for $750....

Lots of good discussion here... Did you end up finding an axle? I'm trying to go same route h55f in '76 40. Trying to find a rear axle for parking brake.

Thanks Georg, I'd really prefer to upgrade to the single wheel cylinder auto adjusting brakes. If I can't find one i'll give you ring and go that route.

I have one in Los Angeles out of an 1980 40 Series

1980 is too early, the switch was in 1981 to the rear axle with park brake

Just find ya a disc brake 70 series rear axle, move spring pads, bolt er in......Full float, uses common 80 series brake components, has the mini drum emergency brake....

Harder than finding 40/70 series FF with drum brakes. Do you know anyone importing 70 series FF rear axles with disc brakes? Show these started around 2000+. Technically still illegal to import the entire vehicle to be parting one out. Finding one as cheap for the same as drum axle would be very lucky. Even the drum brake FF seem to have gone way up in price since I last bought one. Last was in 2015 and $500 from a wrecking yard. It was from 84 HJ47RV And did include the driveshafts. Today seems that price far less than current pricing.

The FF 70 rear with disc brakes started in 1990. From 1998 and up they went with 5-lug pattern …… the backing plates for these are notorious for rust issues and impossible to find.

We are working on a solution ……… narrowing stock FJ60 housings to 40 width. We’ve built a jig and have the proper alignment rod/pucks.

Agree on the backing plates. Impossible to find. But I did figure out a path to use 78/79 series backing plates on 90-97 70 series full float disc. After going through what seemed to be 100s of pictures, I noticed the backing plates were the same except on spot welded on plate. So I removed that plate from the rusty 70 series backing plate and installed them with the new 78/79 series.

seems like it would be a easy piece to laser out. :hmm:

Agree.... since I had the old rusty backing plate, I just removed the 2 spot welds and moved it over
