Looking for 40's with SBC and headers

Wondering what you guys are running for exhaust on 40's with Chevy motors. I had the ram horns but would like to go with something that flows better. I would like to stay inside the frame rails and i know that block huggers would fit buy i'm wondering if anything else will work. Pics would be great!

PS what mufflers are you guys using for loud but tasteful sound?

i am running fender well headers. i wanted to run block huggers but was worried they would hit my steering rod.. i did the saganaw power steering conversion..
i was also looking at downeys ultra block huggers... they might work better cause most block huggers stick out 4 1/2" or so from the block and the ultra's stick out like 3 1/2" i believe.

i got the fender well headers for dirt cheap so i opted to run them..

i got the block hugger headers they are fine no problems. i also ran dual exhaust with flowmasters

Ibinazbass, pay attention to how Kool Ken routed his exhaust, right side crossing over to left side in front of the deep part of the oil pan. Nothing is cleaner!!! Typically you'd bring both pipes into a Y before the firewall, then run a single 2.5 incher out the back door.
Further, fj40taz is right, do not confuse block huggers with ultra block huggers!!!!

No need for headers IME. It doesn't get any simpler, less expensive or trouble free than ramshorns. You will regret any header, especially the over-the-fenderwell type.

I have block hugger headers and the stock steering box, and the combo sucks. There is inadequate clearance and two of the header tubes had to be dimpled to clear the box. They'll eventually be replaced by rams horns.

I'm running Sanderson block hugger headers for mine. No pics yet. I need to go pick them up from the ceramic coater. They are finally done...3 weeks later.

Fieldsken1, what steering are you running? Will the ultra block huggers clear the original manual steering box? What about that much heat right next to the starter? Will that hurt it?

ill trade my block huggers for you rams horns! oh and ditch the stock steering switch to fj 60 steering or scout or 800 sag. stock has way too many ends for slop. my blockhuggers clear the steering shaft for the 800 box with enough space also you can shift the engine to the passenger side for exrta clearance. stock motor was offset also

if i were to do a new exhaust it would be the corvette ram horns supposedly they have the biggest collectors out of all the ramshorns they look not bad also.

Will the ultra block hugger ones clear the stock steering?

evidently the thing to do is measure the distance from the side of your cylinder head to the gear box. As fj40taz said, the ultra block huggers only stick out about 3.5" (actually closer to 3.75" I believe). Frankly, I've had better success with these Headers than Manifolds, so to each his own!!!

I'm at work now but I will measure my clearenve tonight when I get home. I am planning on switching to power steering but I want to get it back on the road and then start saving up and collecting parts for the conversation. Anyone know the price of ultra block huggers?

My 40 came with the AA fenderwell type, they worked fine for years but eventually rotted out, but that was mostly (or entirely) due to the fact that I have no inner fenders.
I eventually replaced them with another set, and shortly thereafter acquired some 'vette ramhorns, but those are still sitting in the shed, somewhere.
The only problem, aside from my lack of inner fenders that is, was that I once somehow overheated the rubber caps on my brake master cylinder. These headers come fairly close to the underside of the master.
If I was to do it again, I'd use the ramhorns,as one can then run the exhaust down the inside of the frame.

I run rams horns with the flowmasters. Nice tone.... I ordered the block huggers and ended up runnning into my steering rod. Bummer. Ramhorns are just fine and cheap. 45.00 bucks.

I run the Sanderson QP1000s. Once you get used to looking at them, they are pretty cool. Plus, they are super easy to install and runs fine without a gasket.

I ran block huggers prior and had to dent the headers to clear them.

I have about 2" of clearance from the steering shaft now.

I measured the distance between the head and my steering box and I'm sitting right around 3". Guess I'll have to stick with my ram horns until I switch to power steering. Dang. Oh well. Thanks for all the advice!
