sorry for the hijack... your avatar cracks me up. My office is across the street from a elementary school and I pick up about 200 cigarette butts a week. I'd love to get that sign.
Sorry bro, maybe I wasn't clear. I'm going to look at it tomorrow (i'm hoping to buy), just trying to find out if there's anything I should be looking for when I go down there as i've never owned a winch before.
Thanks anyway, at least now I know it's a good deal.
So, that guy won't respond to e-mails and he didn't leave a phone number.
I found another one just kinda curious how difficult it would be to find the gears for it?

If the two gears you are talking about are the (obvious one) and the one directly below it (main gear), then the parts are about $250.00
The top gear is actually part of the pinion shaft, the gear below it is the main gear that drives the drum. If I had it that far apart....I'd put new seals in it and a lower housing kit as well.
Unless you can buy that one "for a song", I'd keep looking for one that doesn't need any gears changed out.
The pinion and cam for that model is part # 7732 and the main gear is # 7550. I believe those numbers are correct. About $250.00 from redding 4X4.
(If) the winch appears to be in excellent shape (and little used in other respects), then it might be worth fixing up. Chances are, someone "jerked" the line really hard.. in order to cause a gear failure at those points.
Most likely, you have the 3 pin set up on your control box, but a 5 pin controller will work just fine for it.
If the winch has been used hard, it may require a brake service kit also, or at least new friciton material.
Well, I wish I could get it "for a song", but you know craigslist. That's why i'm asking you guys, more knowledge on here than anywhere else I could think of. I guess i'll probably keep looking and just wait until I find the right one.

Probably best to find one that is ready to go to work.
I wouldn't hesitate to buy the one you show above (with gear problems) if I could get it cheap enough. Of course, I don't mind tearing into things and have all the tools necessary to do so. It appears to be in better shape than a lot of them I've seen.
To me... it looks like it was "wounded" early in life...by someone snatching on the cable. The brake system can only do so much before the shock load gets back to the gears.
The Warn 8274 is not hard to work on...and is an excellent winch IMO, but if you wait...you can probably find one that is ready to bolt on and go.
Thanks for the input, for the record i'm not leary of rebuilding a winch. Although i've never torn into one before, I do enjoy a challenge, I just don't want to end up paying 1k for a 20 year old winch.

Last week I saw a really nice one go for $510.00, just about bought it myself. It was only 30 miles away from me also, could have gone and picked it up.:whoops:
The next one I buy will probably be a new 8274-50 though.
Okay another one just came up this afternoon. I called him and left a message because i've e-mailed 4 different people who have theirs up on Craigslist and not one response.
Take a look, it's $400 but the owner says it's never been used and it doesn't look that old. Warn Winch
Yep-look for a used but working one for $400 or so. If it's not working then $250 seems fair, since that's the price of a new motor or solenoid pack. If you have money, then just get a new one, it's still a great winch. Mine has easily winced fully loaded 80 series out of trouble.
If you do buy a used one, do yourself a favor, and immediately split the case and change out the old funky lube.
One other thing-It is easy to convert and older winch to the newer control pack. I did that, and Warn still supplies all the parts and great tech help. They sent me the scematics, a full parts list and the like. I was very impressed.
One other thing you can do, is swap the 150 feet of 5/16 cable fore 125 feet of 3/8 cable, which is more in line with the 8274's capacity.

It's an older model as evidenced by the round free spool knob and the plastic control plug cover. I could tell you more if I could see the pattern of the reinforcing ribs on the lower case.
But....all that doesn't matter. If the winch has not been used much (I doubt it was NEVER used) then $400 is an excellent price for it.
I would plan on cleaning up all the electrical connections and splitting the case to replace the oil.
