I have the weirdest problem. car goes warm and the starter it will go justgo click. NO computer its a 1985 lj70 everything is mechanical. Temp gauge working normal. Starter checked everyhting its ok. Charging system also charging @ 13.8v with full load.

If i wait the car goes cold it will start normal. any ideas what else i can check? btw diesel 2l engine old version not the modified.

If both ends of the battery cables check out ok,[inspect closely where the lugs are crimped or soldered to the cable] and the ground connection to the engine is ok, and the bat terminals are clean, and you can hear the solenoid clicking, [loud click, not the relay click] it may be the brushes in the starter on on their way out. Worn brushes can give intermittent connections with changes in heat. Starter might bench test ok when cold, but once warm it's giving problems.

Also check the positive cable goes straight to the starter and not through an isolation solenoid switch.

checked all that. went to 2 shops just in case

Are you sure its the starter clicking? Many older Toyota diesels have a Starter Relay and because of the inductive load they switch pitted contacts are quite common.. most of them are serviceable.. this is the one fitted to 2Hs.. When the contacts are pitted you can an intermittent no start, and a "click" is heard. A light sanding of the contacts often resolves the issue.

Here are the plunger and contacts in the starter (this one is from an HDJ81 but the starter architecture is basically the same). When they get all pitted like this it can cause intermittent starter problems.

Here they are all cleaned up, I made sure to use a light grease on the plunger body to prevent sticking. I used fine sandpaper (400 grit if I remember correctly).

I've had this same problem, and it was a worn solenoid contact as discussed above. But if you've already fixed that, then maybe some of the engine main relays should be checked also (as suggested above).
