I have a 1992 landcruiser. I'm now replacing water pump. Something still blocks water pump from getting out on water inlet side after taking PS Idler Pully with bracket out. Any idea?

thanks

The hose from the pump to the metal tubing? When I say tubing I mean the lower radiator hose tube, you may not even notice that it's there, but the lower hose is actually two rubber hoses that are divided/joined by that metal tube. It's been awhile, and I got fairly sauced the last time I did this. IIRC, it's straight forward with the lone exception being the small hose on the driver side, but that's when you put it back on, and it's not that tricky.

Thanks for the quick response. I already took off all the hoses connected to water pump. There is a small wheel slightly big then a golf ball used by A/C belt, which just in front of the water inlet side of the water pump. Do I need remove this wheel to remove the water pump?

Again, thanks

Removing the water pump on a 3FE is like removing one of your kidneys with butter knife and soldering iron.

The entire front of the motor has to come apart and the 2 upper studs need to be removed from the block. Somewhere in the history of the 3FE Yahoo list I wrote up a complete description. I'll try to find it.

Found it. 3FE Yahoo Groups message # 71649. Copied below:

So after 2 weeks of waiting for parts and decent weather, the water pump,
hoses, belts, idler pullies, and a host of other parts are all put back
together. Around midnight last night I took another final look at things and
went back over most of the bolts. I checked the parts tray and there was
nothing left over so I filled up the radiator fired that motha up.

After 2 weeks of sitting in pieces she fired on the first rotation of the
crank. I love that. Got underneath and waited for leaks, but alas, there
were none. Put the steering damper and belly pan back on. She purrs like a
kitten. Very quiet now.

What a PITA ordeal for a 3FE motor. Below is a list of items that need to be
removed in order. I'm assuming you drained the coolant first.

Steering damper mount (let it dangle from the relay rod), belly pan,
battery, battery tray, right side wheel well skirts, carb cooling fan
plenum, smog pump hoses, smog pump (York), alternator adjuster, upper
radiator hose, fan, fan shroud, belts, PS idler pulley bracket, AC idler
pulley bracket, 3 piece lower radiator hose, and all 3 studs that secure the
water pump to the block need to be removed. Then you can pull and replace
the water pump.

Add several hours for cleaning parts, soaking 16 year old bolts in
penetrating oil, running cleaned bolts through bolt holes with moly grease,
and...well you get the picture. Not a trailside repair.

Hooray.

You shouldn't need to remove the wheel well skirt or the smog pump. I didn't remove those items when I did mine. It was a horrible job, but definitely doable.

If you don't remove the wheel well skirt it makes it very difficult to adjust the AC belt properly. It's held on with 3 plastic clips. No brainer. If you don't remove the smog pump it becomes a bear adjusting the alternator belt.

In short, no. they don't HAVE to be removed. But the removal makes accessing things that need to be accessed way easier. Once you decide to start a project like this, what difference does a few extra bolts make?

You were being serious? Shoe horning the engine in is a horrible job, the water pump is cake.

Water pump is NOT cake. Sure it only took me like two hours to do it, but they almost could not have designed it to be in a worse place (unless it was timing belt driven, which a 3FE doesn't have). Are there worse jobs? Sure. But it is not a fun job by any means.

It's all relative I suppose. A water pump on a timing belt driven car really isn't all that cumbersome either.

Hooray.[/quote]

I followed above procedure, and get the job done. This procedure is way better than what described in FSM.

Thank you for the great help!

Have you done a water pump on a 3FE while it's in the truck? I replaced everything while I was there because I never want to go through that again.

Yes, 3 times, all were in the truck.

Congratulations on getting the job done! Wasn't that bad now was it?

Everything works great now. I am still keep an eye on any possible coolant leak. It's a real hard work, from Friday night to Sunday night, not counting previous work.

Thanks all for the kind words and help. I love this forum.

Bye the way, great help from CDan, he know what you need. I will never go to dealer again, they only know when you tell them the part number:mad:

3FE Water pump Hose 1"O.D. - w/ preformed bends

Bumped this up w/ question on the 2 larger pre-formed bent
hose (1" OD) that come off Water Pump (3FE) into the tubes
running down valve cover into fire wall.

O.E., they clamp onto the metal tubes with a cotter pin sytle clamp.

Local Toy. dealer says I can't order the preformed Water Hose seperate, that it comes with the tube assembly ?? Find that odd.
QUESTION BEING:
Anyone ever order from Cdan, or replace with just shelf tubing?

Quite a bend, so seams preformed is needed, +, any better clamps that a std. hose clamp that should replace the O.E. cotter pin clamp onto tube end (or is a cheap std. clamp good to go?).

Put a new pump on when redone topend, yet skipped these 2 water hose, and got a leaker/aged end that needs replaced. Preping trip to S.D. in June, so want something more than a
quick fix.

Thanks,,,

I'd be *very* surprised if C-Dan couldn't get you those hoses; call him tomorrow AM.

Plain old auto store hose clamps are fine.

You can only get those hoses pre-attached to those hard lines. I went through the same thing a little over a year ago. I ended up finding a hose with the same bend at a parts place and just had to shorten both ends to fit it. My hard lines were in good shape or I'd have just replaced as well.

3FE Water pump Hose 1"O.D. - w/ preformed bends

SHEP,

Thanks for confirm. Local toy. dealer ordered me the 2 small ones, so when I went in to get, had to first clarify what I REALLY needed and was told only avail. with the metal tube assembly.

Wow...still weird.

Do you happen to recall a part #, or product / veh. reference on the hose you found and cut down ?? Greatly appreciate!

Geoff

Look.

This is one of those things where whom you talk to really matters.

I went through a similar experience recently; I don't remember whether it was the exact hoses you're talking about, but I think it was. I called the local dealer and got the "only available with the hard lines" (for over $200) response. Then I called someone more knowledgeable, and they said, "Hmm..., 62 series Cruisers use the same hoses; I wonder if those years (88-90) list just the hoses as an available part." And whaddaya know; they did (for around $20 or so).

Makes no sense, but that's the way it goes.

CALL C-DAN!!!

Curtis

Edit: Just went out and looked on my rig; I'm 99% sure the hoses I'm talking about are the same ones you're talking about.
