As the title states - was ~10 mi from camp last night when my ABS light went on and started losing brake pressure, stopped to see my front rotor was smoking and outside pad was askew and pressing against it. Took the wheel off, straightened out the pads and attempted to limp on into camp. Didn’t think to check the wheel for play or suspect a bad bearing…

Made it about half way before the rotor gave out (it was red hot) - see pics for carnage.

Question: I know I need to replace the front axel hub assembly, rotor, pads, bearings, seals, etc…. I haven’t torn it down yet but should I be worried about the spline shaft as well from the super heating? Anything else to fret about??

Thanks all,
Alex

Sorry that happened, when was the last time the front hubs/bearings were serviced/packed with grease??

just over 30k miles…was on my to do list for when I take a bit of time off work when the kid is off for spring break. Should’ve done it over Xmas break smh

It got real hot, I’m thinking I may be best served to replace the whole hub assembly vs getting a bearing refresh kit? Or am I overthinking things

You may have trashed the spindle.
Very likely. You may have damaged the outside surface where the bearing seats and you may very well have damaged the inside of the spindle and the birfield. The is a good chance that the weight of the rig was resting on the outer stub of the birfield via the spindle with massive friction and heat and gouging and melting of metal ensuing. Seen bearing failure like this a couple of times that required replacing rotor, pads, bearings, spindle and birfield. And of course inner axle seal.

The hub itself should be okay.

Mark...

Sorry about your drama.
Good advice in posts above.
Not trying to kick you while you're down...
Properly greased bearings should go farther than 30k miles, easily.
A possible issue might have been they were slightly loose to begin with??? :wrench:

well looks like a full front end service is up next - thanks all

That looks like quite an accomplishment!

The hub and flange are still buttoned up, but the inner bearing is fully exposed!

Show us pics of what you find when you take it apart.

I'm gonna guess a bearing siezed and spun the thrust washer and 54mm nuts off the spindle. Spindke is likely chewed!

well thats off the bucket list now i guess

what is the part number for the bolts that secure the Axel Hub to Disk? Going to be a PITA to separate now that the hub has broken off the main disk and figure I should just buy new hardware throughout incase the heat / stress did damage - I've got like 40 parts in my bin at Olathe Toyota, but couldn't track down these bolts despite some a fairly exhaustive searching... thanks in advance

If you don't locate them by tomorrow morning, consider giving the parts department at Olathe Toyota a call. I've found them super helpful in the past when I can't locate a part online. Unlike many of the dealers that also sell online, they are happy to help and always have a positive attitude.

Here’s a look at the bearing - will be replaced anyways but for completeness :)

Yeah, carefully deburr it to save yourself cutting gloves or fingers next time you need to scrape out birf soup.

A little flap wheel sander in a cordless drill is another option for deburring.

What parts needed replacing?

How do the spindle tubes look? Spindle bushing trashed?

Got more photos?
