I saw in the "best mods" thread as well as others that folks have added cheap radio shack buzzers as headlight alarms. One Mudder tapped the buzzer in between the headlight fuse and the gauge fuse. I tried this and I get the chime going off whenever I have the headlights on. I should note that I am using a chime instead of a buzzer. Rather than having just a red (+)and black wires, it has a red, black and blue wire. The black and blue are supposed to be switched. I just tied them together when I tapped them into the guage fuse. Of course, it ain't working right.

In looking at the wire diagrams, i am really not sure how the others got theirs to work. Any ideas?

You need a two wire deal. If you get the one I posted in the cheap mods section you will be happy. It is so loud and annoying that you won't ever forget to turn off your lights because you won't want to hear the buzzzzzzz.

PS if you really want the chime they do have a 12v 2 wire chime.

Get a Radio Shack buzzer. The RED wire goes on the head light fuse and the Black wire goes on any fuse that is hot when the key is on.

When you turn off the key and the headlights are on, the buzzer will go off.

The buzzer is polarity sensitive and will not work if hooked up backwards.

It's a great mod. It has saved my battery a few times.

I actually did buy the two wire buzzer as well and may just install that. But I am pretty much a wuss and didn't want the buzzer to hurt my widdle ears.

I'd really like to get the chime to work as it is plenty loud and far less annoying.

Of course, if I'd remember to turn off my lights I wouldn't have to worry about what sound it makes.

BTW - thanks for the tip Dynosaur. Pretty sweet mod for under $5.

OK. I gave up on the chime and just stuck the buzzer in and all is working fine. I did make one slight change. I plugged it into the taillight fuse, rather than the headlights, so that it goes off if I have left my running lights or my headlights on.

Good Idea, I think I'm going to switch mine over the taillight fuse also!

I chose the headlight fuse because sometimes you need to have the running lights on for safety while the key out. If you switch to LED running light the amperage draw is nill. Either way it will work. I am glad you found this useful. You know that now that you have a buzzer you will never leave the lights on. It's a catch22.

How many times have you left your lights on?

I've only had my cruiser a short time and have put less than 500 miles on it. But I have already done it once (albeit for less than an hour).

I may be stoopid, but I is smart enuf to knows my limitashuns . . .

Seems like a lot of work for something so easy. I guess if I ran out of other things to work on I might try it, but that days in not close

huh?

The point is it is a very simple and cheap mod $3.00 and 5 min. If it saves you even once from having a dead battery it is well worth it. I know that I have left mine on enough times to come up with a cheap and easy solution.

Thought I'd post a couple of pics of what I used. I realize this is self explanatory, but for non electrical guys like me, I thought it would help.

I connceted mine to the tail-light fuse.

I used a Radioshack 12V PC-Board Piezo Mini-Buzzer, part number 273-074. It has a high pitched but not obnoxiously loud beep.

I soldered the wire ends to the buzzer terminals.

i've got one. major peace of mind. expecially here in seattle where we drive with our lights on during the day when it rains (which is a lot!)

Mine has an ignition buzzer (or chime). It drives me crazy. Maybe yours is not working?

hey guys not sure if this would work or not but was considering trying, getting a relay for each light in the fuse box, i think theres four? (left hand headlight, right hand headlight, tail lights and stop lights?) anyway however many there is, if you run each of them through a seperate relay and then get a live ignition wire and run through all of them and then earth it shouldnt that mean all your lights turn off when ignition is off because the relays arent energized? And when they are energized you can operate them as per normal?
I got the idea from my mums volvo cause it does that automatically and her lights are always on.
Hope that makes sense

Cheers matt

I liked the idea of a chime myself so I installed one, probably the same you did. Red goes to the headlight fuse, black and blue both go to the dome light fuse. Works like a charm and sounds much better than a buzzer. Using the headlight fuse is much better than taillight for resaons already stated.
