Persisely, I ended up removing the light housing.

1.) Disconnect battery. (safety)

1.) Knob has a small phillips screw. Unscrew it and remove knob.

2.) Remove nut holding housing to the dash. Needlenose pliers work great for this.

3.) Lower housing. You'll see the light socket on the back. My socket was just held in by pressure tabs.

4.) Change the bulb then reverse order.

Wait - There's a light in the headlight switch? I'm glad someone mentioned that one, cause I never would have thunk it.

Other question - I've got two dash lights - one in the pad above the hazard lights and fan controls and one next to the radio that illuminates the heater/def/vent lever. Were these stock in '77?

Marshall, next time take the photo when the cruiser is at a stoplight. Taking pictures while driving just isn't safe.

For my information - what activates the light that is in the dash pad above the choke and hazard light controls? Mine's not working and I'm just curious where to start troubleshooting.

.

No. And you cannot stop me!:flipoff2:

Unless I had been drinking at the time I believe I took that picture while sitting in the driveway. Shutter speed is what made it look like I was moving.

It works off the light switch and dims with the instrument lights. I would take it out and make sure its hooked up. It will have a wt/blk ground wire and a rd/bl (if I remember correctly) hot wire.

Yes.

You have saved me a lot of resarch! Thank you very much. I will have mine upgraded to LED within the next month. Just installed all new wiring (PAINLESS) and LED's will be a nice touch. I'll post anything worthy as I do my install!

The bulbs kick ass. i just put all new dash lights in last night and they look awesome. granted, i couldn't even see my dash at night before so anything is an improvement.

just want to give props and let everyone know that this is a good $27 to spend.

Great thread. Added to favorites. The only thing that I have to add is that whenever you add a resistor to LED's you're going to increase the power draw significantly. It may be as much as a regular bulb, depending on the resistor used. In fact, you're adding the resistor, to increase the power draw to make the circuit think it has a regular bulb. So... If you're buying them to reduce power draw, this is something to think about. I like them because they are instant on, instant off, and brighter than regular bulbs.

For those of you who have done the instrument cluster light replacement with the LED's did you also remove the light shield from around the light or are the LED's bright enough to leave the shields in place? Thanks in advance!

This is/was a good thread and taking the info I replaced the instrument cluster and dash pad lights. The dash pad light made a big difference in the amount of light. Ditto for the blinkers, high beam indicator and the speedometer area. I can now see my speed at night. However, I was dissapointed in the amount of light added to the fuel and temp gauges. I can't really notice a difference.

Is that common or what I should experience?

I also just did this mod along with removing the light shields. The amount of light gained on the instrument panel is a huge improvement. The amount of light on the fuel gauges is not as much as on the speedo but I can definitely see an improvement.

Flasher postscript

Most 40's use a two pole flasher. The easiest way to find out is to remove your old one and compare it to the diagram at superbightleds site. with an electronic flasher you do not need theline resistors.

For those of you , like me , who missed this reference here is the chart from the site:

Flasher Specifications

Once again great thread, great mod.
