Hi all,
I would like to up my tyre size to 35" from 31.5"
A, how much of a lift will i need to get the wheel clearance ?
and
B, will it degrade my on road handling
The troopie is my daily driver and is 80% on road
would be great to get some feed back
cheers chris :bounce:

well, there are more than one way to skin a cat so ...
body lift
or
suspension lift.

if you are mostly on the highway and your springs are still in good shape then go with a 1.5" body lift and you are golden for 35s.

if the springs are shot then a spring lift makes sense.

Spring overs are probably illegal in your backwards country Chris :hillbilly:, but if it were my troopie it would be SOA in a heartbeat!:hillbilly: Since you say 80% on road you should, like crushers says, go with body lift if suspension is good and if shot or sagging go with a mild 2.5-3in spring lift.
Cheers,
Deny

If 75 series, so front leaves, often the front diff is moved forward to prevent the tyres rubbing on the rear of the front guard. This might lessen the amount of body lift (or suspension lift) required.

One thing I have never really understood with a suspension lift to gain clearance for larger rubber, doesn't it still compress up to the bumpstops, and without extended bumpstops does not really give extra room for larger tyres?

well not really, i drop the bump stops anyway but it will give you an extra 2.5" of upward travel if you don't ...
i like being low and stable.

yes, depending if the tire is fat or skinny, if skinny then you don't need to move the axle, fat you do.

i run 36" tires on the red badboy and i do get rub when turning hard and articulating but they are only 11" wide.

Strange

for some strange reasion i can only see my first post but i see some of you helpful mud members have posted replys ... bare with me til i figure out what im doing wrong

Ah there we go.
Simon its a HZJ75,
Denny you are rite on the spring over and no its not road leagal without spending lots of cash .
I,m going to look in to a body lift /

If you do go body lift, don't buy an off the shelf kit, Just pull out one of your existing body mount bolts & bring it into your local nut & bolt seller and buy longer bolts (grade 8.8)
If you are allowed to use nylon for body lifts get some 2" diameter solid rod (probably should check the original diameter one and get that diameter) and cut them down your self to the right size & drill a hole through the middle of it. Nylon ones are a bit gentler on your body (they have a little bit of give in them) But because they're illegal here I using low grade aluminium ones.

You could also make extended shackles to gain a bit of lift, but that may be a bit dodgy for :p

To fit 35''s to most 70 series you dont need to do many mods, depending on how flexy your suspension is. 2'' Suspension lift ought to do it, maybe move front diff forward 20-25mm depending on clearance.

I have a suspension lift and a 1'' body lift, for me the body lift is great, I used nylon blocks.

I have very flexy suspension, to clear my 35''s rather than drop the bump stops I have cut 60mm or so from the front guards too.

if you take a look at the troopy build thread i have going on you will see how i did my body lift.
i took out the old mounts and made new +1". these are also 3" across instead of the stock 2.5", i used 3" because of the extra stress being exerted between the cab and the frame. also, i used full length steel tube to limit the crush that can be exerted (same as factory).
i went with the complete length extension since every joint allows for movement possibilities.

there are a number of ways to do the body lift.

years ago i installed steel spacer "bushing" welded to the frame and the original mounts. that was overkill but it worked very well.

think it through.

(exteneded shackles, i use them often, within reason but you need to correct the caster once you are done. otherwise it can be like herding cattle down the road, you will get there but you might do some wandering as you go.)

thanks guys looks like a spring over may not be as hard to make legal as posible ... watch this space

SOA - wow I gotta question why you are doing this to a TROOPY

They are tall anyway - what are you planning to drive it offroad for - tough tracks or just camping?

Mine is 35" sneakered and I think minor shackle lift and thats it and I take it to some pretty bad tracks but NOT COMP truk only tracks.

Being lifted will make it top heavy and easier to roll and a TROOPY is easy to stick on it's side.

Are you putting bigger offset rims to match also?

the truck is my daily driver and not for comp i agree about the hight isue , and have considered the options i want to run 35s so hence the lift my rims are a _54mmm off set already so has a very wide stance already , just want a bigger tyre on the rim

now it is more important to re power

well looks like mr happy needs a new heart i will prob start a new thred with this question but i have picked up a 1hd-t (hopefully here next week ) will it bolt up to my 1hz gearbox ?

Probably just as well Mr Happy needs a new heart, the old 1HZ will struggle to push a decent width 35. Have you considered the "gearing up" effect the larger tyres will have.?? Lots of landowners don't like lifted trucks with 35s, and if you are not into competition type stuff, just for general 4 Wheelin in gods own i just wondered why you would bother. Hope you don't mind me askin - just curious. My cruiser was standard with 265/75 x 16s and I changed to 285, which gave a me a 2 inch lift. The truck still looks stock standard. I can understand you wanting extra height as the rear spring hangers etc all foul easily on the edge of ruts - which means you get stuck a bit more that coil sprung trucks.

cheers
