lifter tick after sitting for a long time?

well poop i have no idea. I have not removed any of the valves to see if one is bent. I honestly have no clue without taking the bottom end apart whcih is happening soon.

wondering if you ever resolved the ticking, i am having having the same problem. Got a great deal on a 94 and was told the ticking was excessive lifter clearance. I looked into it and installed a couple new shims but the tick persists. Before I bought the truck it sat for quite awhile.

He's working on a resolution currently :D

(doh what are you doing on mud during the season premiere?)
comin out 005 (Medium).webp

yea i'm not a gleek!

i'm not saying what i'm doing is what it takes. I had planned on doing this anyways, but with the tick, a few long trips planned and the budget finally allowing i decided to do it all.

yea, i hear ya. Just kinda running out of ideas. I suppose ill pull the valve cover again and double check my clearances. Maybe dig a little deeper and see if i find anything. thanks

I have the same problem Mine only sat for maybe 4 days while getting repaired (and now ticks for days ...was told I need a valve adjustment so that will be what Im getting. Before i take the plunge I will get a full diagnostic to make sure I'm fixing the right thing Motor has 211,XXX miles

I think a valve adjustment is a smart first step IMHO.

BTW these engines do not have hydraulic lifters as most mechanics not knowledgeable with the motor will say is the problem.

I was just going to say these vehicles don't use hydraulic lifters. I wish they did, but Toyota probably didn't want to build in the facilities to oil them up into the head.

As CJ mentioned, it's probably out of adjustment valves.

Reviving an old thread but I have a thought about this. Snowruns had a PS pump fail on his '94 and we learned the PS fluid gets pumped into the engine when the pumps fail. While ATF isn't the worst thing to run through an engine, it sure cleans stuff out. He is experiencing a very audible tick in the valve train after the pump was rebuilt. Assuming a bearing hasn't spun, the varnish might have been enough to mask a valve train tick prior to the cleaning.

Interesting. This all happened after i had a power steering hose (high pressure) blow and i replaced it and rebuilt the pump at the same time. So maybe you are on to something.

How does the PS fluid get pumped into the engine?

On his, the seal behind the gear was leaking. We kept topping it off to get him home and noticed the ATF wasn't ending up on the ground. When he got home, the oil was red and about five quarts too full.

I swapped out the filter and oil with no real effect.:frown: I guess my next step will be to have the valves adjusted. I will report back my results.

I think the valve adjustment is the right method. Please let us know your results.

that has to be one clean engine...lol

on a serious note, it may be a good reason why my engine inside looked amazing for the mileage. I thought it was just from good maintenance and M1 syn oil use, but maybe i had a little extra help towards the end that i didn't know about.

So I took the valve cover off and went through the FSM procedure for checking the valve shims and everything was well within specs. I also checked the timing and belt tension and everything was fine.
I still however have a pronounced tick. On a side note the ATF did a really good job of cleaning the inside of the engine. I of course wouldn't recommend it as it causes a ticking noise.:D

Unless your ps pump seal was bad, a leaky high pressure hose would not get any ATF into the engine.

OK, i did the same thing last night. It's crazy that i'm just now checking valve clearances, but i did.

WIth the head off i checked and on the exhaust side i had one valve that was too tight and several that were just on the outter limits of acceptable.

On the intake side none were tight but two were loose. I really think the loose valves were causing my ticking. The tight one wouldn't cause the noise but could have been a problem in the near future.

Guess i'm going to order a few shims. :meh:

I had a pretty bad tick and while putting off the valve adjustment I wound up needing a new water pump and a few more things that I just didn't have time for.

Took it to a shop who has done work for me in the past to do the water pump replacement for me, when it came back there was no tick so I called them up.

They told me 2 of the mechanics felt like working on my truck was a gift so they returned the favor and adjusted my lifters for me. They also traced down every rattle, ting, and click they could find to make my engine as quiet as possible. The only thing they didn't quiet was my AC compressor which has a slight whine to it but they ran out of time before replacing the bearings on it.

Never thought my old 3FE would be as quiet as my 06 Sentra.
