Liability Insurance? Who has it?

Yep and they (insurance companies) knock you for it.

My insurance was way higher living in Seattle, WA than Ashland, OR.

I keep full coverage on both my cruisers, 96 & 97. Progressive charges me about 500 per rig per year, pretty good I think. Thats with other vehicles, multiple discounts, etc.

Cruiser body parts cost too much to not have it covered, although when my 97 is paid for I may drop it to liability because of my "ARB/IPOR insurance":hhmm:

Interesting comments.....I also have my cruiser paid off and bumpers are my protection as well...i am just looking at it as a way to save $650 a year on something i dont drive more than 5k miles and all these stories lately about people getting in very minor fender benders and the insurance totaling it anyways...guess i have some thinking to do

I have USAA as well and since I use this as a Family Vacation & Camping vehicle, I am carrying full coverage and went from 500 to 250 deductibles on all my cars. (full on the Sienna & LX and comp on the CRX and RC51(this has theft and vandalism added).

I estimated that accidents do happen unexpectedly and at the worst moments when you may be low on cash... So a high deductible only prevents you from reporting an accident if the damage is less but then you are stuck with paying out of pocket for repairs (unless you got hit ;0 then hopefully they have insurance)

I figure it is a matter of personal preference to be insured and not worrying about enough funds to fix it, especially for me when I have 5 kiddos I have to provide for...the least thing I need to worry about is my rides. But carrying full coverage on the LX is my peace of mind, in case some fool whips in front of me and I am blamed.....

All I need now is to someone to rear end me so I can get my Slee rear bumper & sliders ;-) lol

I only have liability but i'm really considering getting full coverage. Most people around here dont have insurance(even though its state law) and iv been backed up into to many times to count.

That's exactly my point, once again; full coverage is right for you and your situation.

On the other hand, while I'm by no means wealthy or anything more than middle class, I have plenty of cash available to where I would never have to worry about what I would do if one of my rigs was totalled. It would just be an unfortunate small-term blip in a much bigger long-term plan. Fix it or replace it on my dime and move on.

I sincerely hope I'm not sounding arrogant or one-sided in this thread, but I really do want to provide a balanced perspective.

I only have liability coverage with uninsured motorist insurance. I'm saving about $700/year for 5 years, so I'm already $3500 ahead. I used that money to buy a tires, a front bumper, sliders, and a suspension lift.

I've been rear-ended 3 times. All 3 times the other car was in really bad shape while the 80 (with tow hitch) only suffered minor injuries (mostly to the tailpipe and cracked bumper corners). Once was my fault for chaning lanes on the freeway, but the other 2 times wasn't my fault.

I'll be screwed if it gets stolen or if I crash it real bad and it's my fault. So far, the 80 is pretty safe against 35 mph rear-endings thanks to the tow hitch.

I wonder if having a hidden kill switch would make it that much harder to steal.

I'm knocking on wood as I finish typing this post...

That's a bit of an overstatement, no?

Location is one part of determining one's financial and emotional ability to tolerate/handle risk.

I have full coverage on mine. I drive about 22k miles a year so USAA dings me there. If I remember right going to liability only wasnt that much cheaper (due to my miles driven) and if I screw up and total it tommorow it's nice to know I will get a nice check to go get another one with.

We are also way overinsured, but after a wreck 2 years ago that left me off work for 8 months and with permanent injuries, I learned the value of carrying enough. If not for our underinsured coverage we wouldnt have been as well taken care of. Its nice to know no matter what happens my insurance is covering it.

Or if I (or my wife) make a dumb move and hit someone they will be taken care of and not have to worry.

I have had liability only for 3 years saved me $1800 ;p

As I started reding this thread I was thinking why get full coverage on a 94 that i paid 5,500 bucks for? but the farther I got the more I realized it just might pay off in the long run, because the bluebook is so much more than I paid, especialy if they total it after a fender bender and I can buy it back cheap
Hmm..now you guys got me thinking

I have liability and medical payments coverage for me and passengers, as well as under-insured motorist (not the same as uninsured motorist, which I have because of state law).

I have liability on my 94. To have full coverage on a 15 year old vehicle with 230,000 miles and ticking with armor would just seem to be an investment with diminishing returns. JMHO:flipoff2:

I went the opposite way -

I have Full Coverage on all the vehicles in my sig., even the Scout. I recently went from the smallest deductibles ($100) to the highest ($1000). Savings per vehicle isn't that great, but add them all up and it makes a difference. If you have the cash in the bank to cover the larger deductible, doing this makes sense to me.

Seriously knocking on wood as I type this . . .

Just switched both the FZJ-80 and Corolla to Liability/Uninsured Driver/Medical only -- no comprehensive -- and it will be cutting our insurance costs in half. Both cars are over 10 years old and the comprehensive just didn't seem to make sense anymore. All of that savings, even over the course of one year, will be a substantial "self-insured policy" that can be used on anything, not just vehicles.

Knock, knock, knock :steer:

I made this change yesterday, so I feel pretty covered under the April 1st legal umbrella. I drive ~150 miles/day in the Corolla and I can already feel the insurance situation making me a better driver :flipoff2:
