Yep, I can't claim anything original about my signature. It just kind of resonates with me.
Also, if you find a used tranny with probably less than 150k miles, I'd say you're good for at least that many more miles on it. This is one of the first time's I've heard about a GX (or any Toyota) tranny going out, except through abuse.
BTW, how many miles on your GX now?

that's the current mileage, 168. Bought it last September (when we couldn't find the same vintage LX) with ~158 or so
We've been VERY disappointed with it... rear brakes had a catastrophic failure, air conditioner is not working (still TBD) and now the transmission. We've had really good luck buying used Toyota/Lexus SUV's but this one has been the exception. Maybe poor maintenance??? The guy we bought it from (private party sale) said he took care of it but...

Did he give you a stack of receipts for service? Did you run a CarFax on it?

We did get a CarFax and tried to get as much information as possible.... it wasn't perfect but seemed ok. Lesson learned

Just got off the phone with the shop and it's not good. No parts or transmissions available for the foreseeable future, >8 weeks. And the car can't sit there so I've got to decide between 2 horrible options: a used transmission for 8k (new is $5) plus 3 in labor or 2k to put it back together and sell with a transmission CEL code... I want to puke

I think the big problem with Lexus maintenance schedule is that it only calls for AT fluid changes every 60k miles for extreme service of heavy loads or towing. Many dealers don’t even want to offer service and rely on the “fluid for life”. I did full fluid change on mine at 55k miles or so. I plan to do a drain and fill with filter swap in 20k miles. Absence of external AT cooler doesn’t help either IMO.

Wonder if you could do that Nomad valve body from Cruiser brothers with OEM solenoids? Of course if the TC is in doubt might be dumping good money toward further issues to repair.

Just my opinion, but I think you'll lose more $ in trying to sell it with the code and and honest description of the problem (that will be a hard sell) than if you did the tranny swap and sold it or decided to keep it. :meh:
Really sorry you're in this rock and a hard spot position.
Another possible band-aid/solution: do you have a place to store it? Can you tow it and maybe keep it on the side of the house or something until a tranny comes in?

Thanks for the advice... agree, the resale with problems isn't going to be good. I was able to find another used transmission for $5500 but its another $4k to service it and install it once it arrives. Still weighing options

4K to R&R the transmission sounds really high. Even w flushing the lines and doing a service. I’d shop around

According to “ProDemand” labor time to remove and replace is 11.8. Add a couple hours for flushing and seals.

Great feedback... he quoted 2650 labor to R&R; $397 for parts/fluids/seals to service the transmission and $375 for 'programming'; with tax it was just under $4k

Hate to spend that much on a used transmission but don't want to spend $1500 to put it together to wait for a new one either.

4.6 tundra or sequoia tranny an option? Just trying to think outside the box

Matt @ OEM told me there is one miraculously still in Lexus/Toyota parts network.

There is a $1k core charge you see on all the Toyota/Lexus sites.

On the Tundra and Sequoia compatibility.... really don't know.. different PNs and have never heard of an official transplant of motor or AT From those vehicles into a 460. There is a tow/haul mode on the Tundra so not sure if this is all done with external electronics or perhaps something stock to the Tundra version of same AT.

I would be more inclined to think the Tundra and (equal model year) Landcruiser would be far more compatible for drive line component swaps.
Much like the Taco and 4R. But unfortunately there is no truck parallel version of the GX.

How can I get more info? I was told there was a big backorder

I would think so as well but expensive experimentation not knowing for sure
