Anyone out there done a LED headlight conversion? I came across these guys:
http://hidconcept.com/index.php?l=product_detail&p=119 and wondered if anyone had any reports, reviews and/or opinions on these things. $200 seems to be a fair price (I saw what appeared to be the identical thing on flea-bay for almost $900!!) Another place had a kit that again, looked identical but for about $120. (I'm so confused! :crybaby:)

I'd like to do some type of headlight conversion but I don't think I'm ready to go through all the headaches associated with the full HID conversion and the blue bulb swaps seem to be the redneck way. :hillbilly: Any thoughts and/or advice would be terrific. Thanks!

1) Good luck fitting a H7 into a 9006 socket.
2) Multi-point reflects and a LED are not going to produce a very nice beam.
3) The heat sync will cause a moisture issue, the fan will probably fail due to moisture, and you will be left without any lights...

Installing a HID kit is not hard, drink a beer while installing it on Hawaiian time and you won't even see it. If you don't want to spent time improving your headlights, you need to rethink your approach. Look up HIR's. Great alternative, proven design, and simple.

Thanks for the head's up.... I'm a newbie to the 100 series here... (I've owned 80's for the last 8 yrs though). What are the differences between HID's and HIR's?

HIRs are just different bulbs. HIDs are bulbs, ballasts and wiring involved. HIRs are fairly cheap. Lots of 80 guys do them. HIDs will give lots of light but also a lot of glare/light scatter. If you want to do it right do a hid retrofit.

HID's, HIR's, HID-retrofit, what is all of that? I have on 2004 LC, what if I just want a clearer brighter light than the stock bulb. What is the eaiest, don't want to mess with rewiring anyting and risk and electrical problem later downthe road, would rather have something that just plugs in.

Then buy HIR bulbs. Meets your criteria.

You do have to modify (file or dremel the tabs on the HIR bulbs to fit in the light slots). It's pretty minor, you can see what you have to do here. http://store.candlepower.com/mohirbuba.html

I've been happy with my HIRs. I got Philips one's off amazon. But you can get them through John Deere also. You will be buying 9011 and 9012 bulbs (for low and high beams) to replace the stock 9005 and 9006. (I think it goes 9011 for 9005 and 9012 for the 9006). I believe on the LC the low beam bulbs are the same as the fogs. I believe how it works is that the filament.

Price on amazon I think is just for 1 and not a pair FYI.

What's the point of going to all the extra work for the HID's when the HIR's appear to have fewer drawbacks?

I know the HIR's only lead a small modification but there are no lights on the market that just go in with no mods?

You can get JDM high wattage 9005/6 bulbs, but then you need to upgrade your harness.

Adding additional wattage is fine, short term. The heat that is produced by these "high wattage" bulbs will destroy the reflector and peel the chrome. There really isn't a way to win the battle with the 100 headlights. They just weren't designed for anything other than OEM bulbs. They are the worst modern day headlight I have seen to this day. Besides the Dodge Ram...

Anyone got any pictures / examples of the peeling reflector problem?

This is the best one I can find. This headlight is not peeling, but has lost it's reflective layer. Any moisture or dust leak will deteriorate the reflector bowl. There is not a way to refinish simply, unless you re-chrome it. As you can see in the picture, the internals are silver rather than chrome and shiny. This is a common issue with DRL's as they constantly produce heat, and burn the chrome to a haze or peel it off.

Well it looks like it's mine is staying OEM for me? Don't want to try and replace something to make it better and creat more problems. "Don't fix it if it ain't broke"

I never go by this saying. Tell me when your TB breaks!
