So, my steering box is leaking about 1/3 quart a day. I think the seals on the side of the box are gone. I bought a rebuild kit for it since I hope to do it myself and I was wondering...

1. How hard is it to remove the steering box and rebuild it?
2. Do I need any special tools?
 
If you really are going to do it yourself, at least get the FSM.

I considered doing mine, but instead sent it to Matt Hodges at West Texas Off Road, and got it done for $100, I believe. He did a great job, and it was done quickly, as well.

Removal of the box is not difficult, just undo the lines attached at the top, undo the big nut holdling the pitman arm on, and undo the bolt that clamps the steering shaft onto the splined input of the box. Then, remove the four bolts that hold it to the frame, and you're done.
 
spend the 200 and get it rebuilt and ported for same money through psc motor supoorrt they do a great job and fast turn around ..just my 2 cents
 
I second the comment on the FSM. I did need to make a tool to remove & install the adjusting nut on the input shaft. The FSM calls for other SST's for installation and setting the teflon seals, but I didn't use or need those.

Removing the pitman arm from the gearbox output shaft is often a pain. You will probably need a good quality tool for this.
 
I've got a 3-ton pitman puller to pull the pitman arm. So I hope that part will go smoothly. I don't have the FSM, just the Haynes manual and the Chilton manual. So far, I've only looked at the Haynes, and there is nothing inside about the rebuild.
 
Go to www.birfield.com and down load the fsm. I've got it and it covers the box rebuild. This way you can print up the pages you need.
 
I've had two different steering boxes leak at the input shaft seal. Its just an oring and is available from the Toyota dealer. The first time I removed the box from the truck to work on it. As mentioned above, SSTs or the ability to fab some custom spanners are needed to set the bearing preload and locknut. The second time I replaced the input seal, (different box, different truck) I left the the box bolted to the frame and worked through the fender. You may or may not need to rebuild the whole thing. If the output shaft seal at the pitman arm is leaking, then I think the whole thing has to come apart.
 
I took one look at the FSM steps and sent my to west texas off road. Takes a bunch of special tools and some tricky measurements to do the job.
 
I put seals in my box and as the bearings were ok I did not replace them.The small set of needle bearings and card were ok so it was only the O-rings. The large roller bearings in the housing were ok and should be right unless the box has been run dry or short on oil.I forget now which part no was which but the kits for the HJ75 for the pump and steering box were 04446-30030 and 04445-60020. Where the two O-rings sit on top of each other it is difficult to get it back into the housing, I wrecked the two O-rings on my first attempt. However a good diesel mechanic told me to clamp them for at least 20 minutes and they will go in easier.Of course have everything oiled on assembly.The two boxes are nearly identical except the steering arm is opposite. I've found my '84 HJ60's pump is a lot happier in it's old age when the belt is loosened a little.

I was not really prepared to spend money on it straight away and my mechanic loosened the belt a little because he was worried it might cease, as it leaked a lot, and it would fail occasionally.

Since then its been sweet, doesn't lose fluid any more either..
