I posted a while back that my cruiser (85 FJ60) has been stinking of fuel. Never figured it out until today. I was under the hood while it was running and I noticed a hose getting wet, like it was raining. I felt around and sure enough there was a steady spray of gas coming from the fuel pump. Standing over the passenger side front tire, looking toward the block, the spray was coming from the bottom left side of the fuel pump. I felt around and could feel it coming out of what felt like a knob or something (couldn't see under there).

Any ideas where it is coming from, what would cause it to leak like that and does this mean time for a new fuel pump? If so is Cruiser Dan the best source for a fuel pump?

I recently changed myfuel filter, but I suspect this issue was happening before the new filter was installed.

No wonder my MPG's are so bad.

Thanks for the help, I'm hoping someone else has encountered this or has expereince with a fuel pump.

The pump is junk.

Change the pump and change your engine oil and filter.

Poser is right.

Cdan is the best option for OEM at a great price.

On my Fj62 the fuel pump is inside the tank in the back of the vehicle. Are we talking about the fuel filter in the engine bay, passenger side?

Thanks for the confirmation on the bad pump.

Just curious, why change the oil and filter, and are you referring to the oil filter or fuel filter?

Once the pump has pooped it's pants, it may cause gasoline to get into the engine and contaminate the oil by way of breaking it down and thinning it to the point that it no longer lubricates. It probably didn't happen, but it is possible since the pump has a direct passage into the motor.

It's a 60, so it's bolted to the front passenger side of the engine actuated by a cam lobe.

You guys in the 60's are lucky. I had to drop my tank to replace mine, that really sucked...

Good to know there is a positional difference. Thanks for the clarification.

The fuel was leaking out of a weep hole that is built into fuel pumps to let you know they are bad kinda like a water pump. Like they all said though if left long enough it will bleed gas into the oil. I had the same problem and drove it like that for a while waiting for a OEM replacement from california. tried to order one from local parts house but never got the right one and when I did get one that was same build it didn't develop enough pressure to keep my 60 running much above an idle, and for you 62 guys-- well i bet mine was cheaper and easier to replace, I 'll change oil anyday over dropping a tank:bang:

 Who said we needed to drop the tank.

5 minutes and we have a hole in the floor;p

don't mess up when changing the pump, remember to use the spacer block. otherwise your new pump won't work very long.

sorry 88 natural asumption no harm intended. and 3_puppies is right forget the spacer and replace the pump again.
