Greetings,

Been lurking for a while now, I will try and respect the pillars of knowledge that frequent this board. Hopefully this first post is worthy of this wonderful resource. Proud to see so many canajunz on here. Flaunting our rusty beautiful oilburners to the yanks.

Right-o, let's get into it, then. Proud owner of a new-to me BJ60 (I know, wrong forum, but this is definitely the 3B resource, so I'll try here first), nice truck, love it. Previous owner drove it slowly and changed the oil really often. Idle was about at 7-800 rpms. Took it on a marathon trip, down to the states, and on the way back noticed that the engine ran smoother, but idled at about 1400 rpms. I drove it for a while like that thinking it might have been s***ty fuel. Eventually after a few tanks, I decided to adjust the idle. I noticed witness marks and a missing little wire on the adjustment, presumably having been turned up before. I lowered it down some, but it is still idling high, not in itself a cause for concern, however the following has me worried. Off the highway, it will idle at 1400 rpms for a while (30 seconds) before settling down to a more normal and bearable 1100 rpms. It seems like the idle has crept up from when I adjusted it last, but I'm not certain. It may just be paranoia mixed with too much TimmyHoz.

What I think happened: Carbon/crud buildup from years of mild mannered driving got cleaned out during my trip, and I have pretty much returned the idle to normal. This is what I tell myself at night. But I am secretly wondering if there may be a problem with the pump or injection system causing the high idle and surge once coming off the highway. Yay? Nay? What is the normal spec for 3B idle speed? What about that perplexing high idle after coming off the highway? it's annoying in the drive-thru at Wendy's.

Thanks for any info or experiences you may have. Related experiences. Because although your uncle Marv's frog story is funny, it's just not appropriate around here.

Bit about me - First post after all. Automaton, Ottawa, former Land-Rover freak, sold my soul and got a BJ60, never really looked back. Still building the Land-Rover equivalent of TippyR, 1980 109, 5.9CTD, auto, LT230 and 5.14 Eatons, but secretly thinking that I might ditch Brutus and just spring over the cruiser, swap the winch over and have fun. Lifted wagons have that "je ne sais quoi". Also have a mine-truck 1PZ laying around for eventual swappage into something Yota.

Cheers.

Sounds like the diaphram at the end of the injection pump. I 've never changed mine, but I hear it's easy. About 30 CAD at 4wheelauto.com. To test it remove the top end of the clear plastic hose at the back of the pump. Blow into the hose. If your ears pop and your face goes red, it's fine. If you can blow through, it needs replacing.

i would suspect the diaphram is ripped, this typically causes high idling...

someone correct me if i am wrong but international is for anyone driving what the state boys couldn't get.. right?
cheers and welcome...

That makes sense. Slight leak would cause the engine to run at higher RPMs until vacuum builds at idle. causing my erratic idle. Thanks for the tip.

welcome to the board.

research using the search functions is very useful.

there are posts about the diaphram that will be very helpful.

If you own an BJ60 you come here. The 60 series forum is very helpful too. But just don't expect them to help you with anything engine orientated.

but you can ask anything tech related for your bj60 on this forum. as said it above it is an international model.

:)

You are in ottawa, so am I, actually in Orleans. Drop me a line anytime. Are you driving the brown 60?

I've owned a 60 before. Great truck.

Regards

Louis

Louis, Yeah, I live about a block from your place. Small world, wow. We waved the other day close to the grocery store, I've seen your 80 around too. I drove by your house last night with a loaded Xterra with canoe on top. We stared at the cruisers for about 3 minutes. I own the brown 60 which is all stock... How long have you lived in Orleans?

I gotta stop in and check out your cruisers!

Funny, as I read the part about the land rovers I thought damn, this sounds like J-L and sure enough, it is.

J-L, well, then get on over here! I'm just doing some work on a 74, come take it for a drive for fun.

Hey... il semble avoir de plus en plus de Cruiserhead de l'est Canadien ici !

Welcome Fromage... :)

welcome!

it has been my experience (on trips in the US to see uncle marv and his frogs :flipoff2: ) that US diesel is MUCH better than canadian crap. not sure why, but thats what i notice.

search for "neetsfoot oil" for some interesting reading, as i'm also sure you will be changing the ... diaphram ....(giggle) on your fuel pump.
