Just in case anyone missed the email, we ended up changing the Storm Mountain trail groups to Miller Rock. We've been discussing this matter with the USFS for a few weeks. The short version is that the expected the trail to open as scheduled on 6/15. A combination of prior damage from the Cameron Peak fire and runoff from this winter is taking a toll on the trail. It just wasn't ready to be fully opened.
They re-evaluated the trail yesterday. It's drying out and is on track to be open by their next assessment. Unfortunately, the next scheduled assessment occurs during the event. So, we're calling an audible.
The new trail is Miller Rock. We didn't run it officially in 2020 but we think it'll be a good fit for the event. It's a bit under the radar but offers a great mix of obstacles that are just challenging enough and scenery. If you're already familiar with the trail, or if you end up watching some YouTube videos, it's worth noting that we're not recommending all 3 trail spurs for the group. One spur, 252 from the intersection to the southeast, features an obstacle that would impractical to bring the full LCDC group through. It'd be a different story if it was a loop or one way trail, but the trail ends not long after the obstacle and we're not seeing many places to turn around. It's just not worth it in our opinion. Folks are welcome to do it on their own after the official trail concludes, but we'd recommend exiting the trail with the group and then hitting Ironclads, MSV/Coney Flats, or something else on the way back to FC if you need more wheeling.
Note: most of the gnarly photos you'll see below feature that obstacle that we will not be completing, officially. There will be plenty of other obstacles on the trail, though, to test your mettle (and metal).
