I know I mentioned this earlier in the thread, but for anyone looking to do some pre-LCDC wheeling, reply or PM me. My 15 year old and I are loosely planning to camp in Moab July 2-7 and then Ouray July 7-12. He's started looking at the Funtreks guides to build a plan but we've not yet booked campgrounds so we're pretty flexible, and other than a few specific trails like Top of the World I think what we try to do will depend on who else decides to come. I likely won't do anything harder than that trail unless I'm with a group who are all better than me.

My goal is 2-4 other trucks - a big enough group to explore with help but small enough we're able to stay together. It's also a reasonable size to do an overnight trip like kokopelli or lockhart. We've not settled on tent vs trailer yet for camping... I think my son wants to do tents but I'm not sure I want to do that for 2 weeks

Obviously you don't have to be going to the LCDC on the 12th to join, but we will be.
My vote is to camp! Keep it flexible for this trip

Yeah I’m heavily leaning that way. I started another thread about critical gear to bring since I’ve not done a tent trip more than 4 days and only once as an overnight overland trip.

I will be between Snowmass and Breckenridge the week of July 15-22. My plan is to hit Montezuma to Webster/Red Cone one day then Montezuma to Saints John/Middle Fork Swan River back into Breck another if anyone wants to join. Dates TBD

I may join you with my 15 yr old son, but let me check my schedule. We can chat Linux and even have a competition!

It’s certainly possible but, It will be a huge push for all that to be open by then. There is a lot of snowpack up here.

If I remember correctly Webster Pass didn't open until the end of July last time LCDC was in Ft. Collins. I only reference that because I remember some folks saying they ran it on their way to LCDC and had to turn around.

It was open that time last year. But this year is completely different. I wouldn’t be surprised if some of these high elevation runs don’t even open this year depending on where they are.

The back side of redcone faces north and gets little sun too

Appreciate the heads up gents!! I’ll keep a close eye and may call an audible accordingly.

There is still so much snow up here this year its nuts. San Juan people better have back ups and check as it gets close.

Looks like on Sched the trails are rated easy, medium, and hard. Anyone have good comparisons to common trails in Moab or the San Juans?

We tend to use the Funtreks ratings combined with our most recent experience on the trails. I also tend to think of trail ratings as relative to the region.

Generally, the trails are less technical than Moab and less dangerous / exposed than the San Juans. Here are a couple specific examples to help. I didn't do a moderate comparison... just think of the moderate trails as more like the difficult trails than the easy ones... just less so. Typically the moderate trails are straightforward enough that we rarely need to spot.

Easy / Green Comparisons:
  • Moab: Onion Creek, Schafer Switchbacks, Chicken Corners
  • San Juans: Owl Creek, the county road from Silverton to Animas Forks, Clear Lake, Last Dollar (even though this trail is more exposed)
  • Breck: The connector fire roads that we used to get from once side of the range to another... Weston Pass, Boreas Pass, etc.
Difficult / Red Comparisons:
  • Moab: Most Moab difficult/red trails have more obstacles than Fort Collins red trails. Perhaps Dome Plateau or Sevenmile Rim would be decent reference points?
  • San Juans: I think Poughkeepsie is a good comparison to Kelly Flats excluding the Mineral Creek portion which is a bit more exposed than you'll find on Kelly Flats. The other "difficult" Fort Collins trails are similar but with fewer technical sections than Kelly Flats. The last climb up the end of Yankee Boy is also similar to some of the steeper sections on Fort Collins trails.
  • Breck: The Chihuahua Gulch moguls and climbs are kinda similar. Above the treeline, North Fork Swan River / Saints John / Deer Creek have a couple steep loose rock climbs that are similar to what you'll encounter on some of the Fort Collins trails.

@TomEf Ironclad to the crash site was the more difficult portion. Lots of loose rock and have to be cognizant of wheel placement, underbelly, and rear coming off rocks...Poughkeepsie? Kelly Flats has a few spots, if I remember correctly where we used a spotter, just cause your windshield is looking at sky or dirt but overall it may be something like Wipeout Hill? Less technical compared to Moab trails for sure.

Agreed on the T-33 comments. That spur was in rough shape in 2020. It's still an option but not the expectation for groups this year. If folks are looking for more wheeling post Ironclads, then Miller Rock would be worth checking out. Another option for T-33 is to drive up as far as you're comfortable, find a good place to park, and hike the remainder. That doesn't really work with 6-10 trucks, though.

Appreciate the breakdown and details. I had a hunch the trails in the area were a little milder than Moab, and the exposure in the San Juans is pretty hard to match. I love the area and I’m looking forward to it.

Beyond stoked, was actually route planning from NJ to CO last night when I got the email. Gonna look at funtreks and what I ran in 2020 and pick according to that later today/this week.

It's pretty easy: 3 red trails total; three days of wheeling. The schedule makes itself; you just need to decide which days to do which red.

See you in a couple weeks!

We'll see. 2 reds oughta be good. A light day is always nice, plus last years damage took me out for too long. I'd rather break closer to home this time.

Don't let your truck smell fear!

I do understand: I live in CO; NJ/PA/MD is a wee bit further away!
