I'm leading the Storm Mountain run on Saturday. Unfortunately, my 200 isn't going to be able to make the trip due a little damage sustained on my last adventure that I haven't been able to fix yet. So, I'll be running trails in my stock Tacoma. I've not run Storm Mountain before but from the Funtreks book it looks to be mostly easy peasy except for maybe the beginning of the climb to Storm Mountain itself. I'd appreciate any local intel on this trial on how chewed up this part really is and the likely hood of naked rocker panel damage is. I think this is the part right at waypoint 2 going to 3. Since I'm on Saturday, I'll have good info from the other runs Thursday and Friday if I need to bail out and find a different trail leader or just park the Taco at the trail head and just not run that part.

Also, I was planning on doing (not leading) Kelly Flats on Thursday and Ironclads on Friday. I have run those before in the 200 and I'm not too excited about doing them in my unprotected Taco so, I may be looking for to just ride along with someone willing that has an open seat. Or. I may bail from those trials and try to get in on others less likely to damage the Taco.
As of last week storm mountain gate hadn’t been opened yet. I’ll try and make a Pre run before everyone comes out and let you know. In the past it’s a pretty easy trail and a stock Tacoma should be fine.

Thanks for the heads up! We're in communications with the USFS about SM but would appreciate any additional updates since we've gotten mixed answers from them.

You'll be fine. Just don't try going down that spot on a quad in front of a bunch of people.

Just in case anyone missed the email, we ended up changing the Storm Mountain trail groups to Miller Rock. We've been discussing this matter with the USFS for a few weeks. The short version is that the expected the trail to open as scheduled on 6/15. A combination of prior damage from the Cameron Peak fire and runoff from this winter is taking a toll on the trail. It just wasn't ready to be fully opened.

They re-evaluated the trail yesterday. It's drying out and is on track to be open by their next assessment. Unfortunately, the next scheduled assessment occurs during the event. So, we're calling an audible.

The new trail is Miller Rock. We didn't run it officially in 2020 but we think it'll be a good fit for the event. It's a bit under the radar but offers a great mix of obstacles that are just challenging enough and scenery. If you're already familiar with the trail, or if you end up watching some YouTube videos, it's worth noting that we're not recommending all 3 trail spurs for the group. One spur, 252 from the intersection to the southeast, features an obstacle that would impractical to bring the full LCDC group through. It'd be a different story if it was a loop or one way trail, but the trail ends not long after the obstacle and we're not seeing many places to turn around. It's just not worth it in our opinion. Folks are welcome to do it on their own after the official trail concludes, but we'd recommend exiting the trail with the group and then hitting Ironclads, MSV/Coney Flats, or something else on the way back to FC if you need more wheeling.

Note: most of the gnarly photos you'll see below feature that obstacle that we will not be completing, officially. There will be plenty of other obstacles on the trail, though, to test your mettle (and metal).

Cole, I'm glad you said this because I was pretty bummed out today about being locked into this trail selection after a couple youtube videos made it clear that I would not be going on this trail.

Getting pretty stoked about this. Leaving in just over a week, the 9th. Seems ill get to town Tues evening, if anyone's running around Wed, or looking to get lunch, run a simple trail, whatever. Also still have a set of method wheels/tires for sale if anyone's looking.

Yeah, the sections of Miller Rock that we'll run shouldn't be much different to folks than what we'll experience on Kelly Flats or Ironclads (or would have experienced on Storm Mountain).

What methods do you have for sale?

Here is a decent video of Miller Rock:

He takes the harder route to the right just before waypoint 2. There are plans to prerun this so we will get good intel before the official runs.

I am leaving from Syracuse, NY next Saturday with intent to be on FC by Tuesday. Anyone going from the NE who wants to caravan, or meet up at some point heading west, let me know.

I’m coming from Texas, but heading to Albany area afterward, maybe we will caravan back.

No way! Absolutely we could but I am shipping the LC back and flying home Sunday to meet friends in the Adirondack Mountains on Monday. Bummer!

we’re in our way to the LCDC, taking a slight detour through Moab tonight, The Maze in Tuesday, Rimrocker next Saturday, and Ouray next Sunday. See y’all on the 12th in Ft Collins (unless anyone wants to meet us sooner)

What time Saturday? I'm pulling outa jersey Sunday, maybe catch up somewhere.

I'll keep you posted, I think I'm rolling 70, Columbus on sunday to either KC or Omaha. I don't really set an agenda or plan, so much as a direction, and look for roadside attractions, nature, oddball things, whatever I can find. Once I'm rolling I'll get ya a message and see what's what.

That’s hillarious, by “Albany area” I meant the Adirondacks. Warrensburg area specifically. Maybe I’ll see you out there too…

Sounds like a plan.
