Pit stop in KY. Also had an appt at Makers Mark to dip some bottles in wax. Made it to Golden, CO. Truck getting some things done at Slee while I work remote in Boulder. Gonna go camping somewhere in the area over the weekend. Wife and son flying in to Denver Monday (they ain’t road trippers) and then we will make our way to Ouray.

Look forward to meeting everyone!

Yes, original shocks. 73k miles now. Damping feels ok to me - softish, but not overly bouncey. I planned on replacing them with takeoffs from the 2021 to "refresh", did not feel that's needed right away.

It just when we hit bump stops where things are unpleasant (as expected) and due to the sag it's not that hard to hit them. Now I unloaded the rig (haven't driven yet) and it sits kinda low. Want to say lower than before we headed out, and perhaps leaning towards driver. Don't have tape measure to take measurements and compare.

Thanks on the reminder on the KDSS valves!

Anyway, I should stop hijacking this thread with my suspension woes. Really wish I had more time to prepare....

I'm always interested in a sketchy wrenching session. Order some springs, a harbor freight spring compressor and find a ditch to lift a wheel. 😂

Your truck won't be the only one there with VA plates! While I do live in CO now, the truck is still registered through work in VA. Looking forward to meeting everyone as well!.

Although I didn't make it off the waitlist to be part of the official event, I will be in and around town! I can't wait to see all the beautiful rigs in person! I will also be in Moab Monday through weds if anyone wants to link up to run trails there.

Ha! Got springs from @RobW0. But looks like Mike at Metric Off Road in Junction City, CO will be able to help me out and switch the springs on Friday. He also suggested spring packers.

I took the unladen truck out today. Better, but still handles like crap and sits too low. So definitely the springs are shot, so weird I did not notice it before... I had something similar happon on my Taco, but that was when I clealy overloaded it. Leaf springs and actually shocks were killed by carrying little too much concrete demolition debris.

Went to Arches and took Willow Springs Road trail. It's easy but had to be really careful to not drag the tupperware on rocks there.

Has anyone run BBP or Poughkeepsie Gulch on the rain? Just curious what wet conditions do to those trails.

I feel like I've only run BBP in rain or hail but it always comes once we're past the point of no return, lol. It'd probably feel a little sketchy in street tires. I'm also not sure it'd be a good idea to descend to the one-way section in a significant storm.

Poughkeepsie isn't an issue in wet weather. I may think twice about exiting via Hurricane/Corkscrew in a downpour. Most of the storms come and go pretty quickly. Waiting for the weather to clear up can be a good strategy.

First time on BB it was pouring rain. No real issues.

Some BB shots from 2016’s very rainy week…

Reminder those traveling west on Highway 50 from Denver or elsewhere there are big closures during the week. This is between Gunnison and Montrose. Looks fully open on weekend for traveling home on Sunday

Suggested detour is I-70 to Grand Junction and then south or go farther south than 50 and head to Durango then North to Ouray. We will be taking I-70 theere and back on Highway 50. I like the drive by Blue Canyon Mesa. First time I drove by it I was amazed as I lived in Colorado all my life and didnt know we had a lake that big here

Keep an eye on the status of I-70 through Glenwood Canyon.

CDOT has been closing I-70 because of mudslides and the threat thereof.

CDOT’s recommended detour (westbound from Denver) will take you north of I-70 through Kremmling, Steamboat Springs and Craig, adding about two and a half hours to your journey!

Colorado Highway 82 over Independence Pass between Leadville and Aspen is an alternative to CDOT’s recommended detour.

Remember that there is an option to Take 50 west and then between Gunnison and Montrose you can either:
  • At Gunni, take a side trip up to Crested butte (135N - about 40 mins north), and then go over Kebler Pass (CR12 about 60 mins: partially paved, but overall very tame) to 133 and take that south to Montrose (about and hour (ish?) mins through Hotchkiss and Delta. This would be an option if you want to check out Crested Butte.
  • After you pass through Sapinero on 50W, and right at the stopping point for the RT50 Construction Closure, you can take 92N over the Blue Mesa Dam and take the scenic drive through the Black Canyon of the Gunnison. Its a very pretty drive, but will probably take over 2 hours to get to Montrose from there (its a slow but beautiful drive through the canyon). Just tell the flagger you are taking 92 (i've made this drive during the closure, so know it's an option.)

Just some more options for those coming from farther away.

See ya'll in less than a week!

Ok. So I hate to bring up comms yet again, but....

I watched a few videos, and rtfm, and I think that I can program frequencies to channels in the baofeng. The question is, are there common frequencies that I should pre-program?

I have a couple of decent GMRS radios and will mainly use the baofeng for monitoring. I know that different groups will be at different frequencies, but are there some common frequencies that would be useful to have already setup?

There are suggested frequencies/channels within each trail description on Sched. We choose them based on the CO band plan.

I’ll have my laptop running Chirp with me and the programming cable for the BF, so we can get you going in a hurry if need be.

Would you be willing to post your config, or the frequencies we are going to use? I have five 5-ur's that I'm going to bring with me. I just haven't gotten around to pulling the frequencies off Sched yet and programming them. If anyone needs to borrow one, hit me up.

Yeah, I haven’t actually created a config for LCDC yet. Was going to compare against what I programmed on the fly last year. Mostly, I think I just put it in Frequency mode and manually selected the frequency each day. I was planning on programming the local repeaters though so it’s not a big deal to add the trail frequencies as well. I’ll do that this weekend. Maybe even tonight.

Chris,
Are these viable options pulling a travel trailer with decent clearance? I’m considering my options ambit we are dragging the camper along. Thanks

Right now Apple or Google want to route me from Golden to Ouray via Leadville and Aspen to miss the I-70 closure. Would be nice if wasn’t hauling 6000lb+ trailer over alll those passes. :) Hoping for improvement by Sunday, but rain forecast not helping slide situation apparently.
