LC80 1FZ-FE timing problem

yep dizzy is fitted in right at TDC cylinder 1 at compression stroke.

Again, I'm not familiar with that engine, but most ECU's have some variety of feedback/feedforward, try unhooking the battery, leave it de powered for 10 minutes or so, long enough to leak any capacitive charge.

tried that too many many times no go - infact the battery was disconnected last night and I connected it back in the morning :/

how many degree's off is the timing, what does the FSM say is correct? if you can't find a correct timing setting within @ 6 degree's, you are probably off a tooth timing gear, if everything else is correct.

by timing gear you mean timing chain mechanism / compression timing?

EDIT: FSM states ignition timing to be 3 deg BTDC

this vehicle doesn't idle stable at 3 degrees but at around 16 degrees.

The compression timing is spot on and the timing chain has no slack

at TDC cylinder 1, crank pulley pointing at 0 - cam pulleys single dots align in a straight next to each other and two dot marks on the opposite sides.. just as the FSM states

Yes - it was the timing chain not installed correctly - the mechanic at that time who checked and confirmed that the timing was ok, was wrong.

timing chain was installed and the engine was timed correctly - it ran very nicely afterward.


after some time its ECU malfunctioned (leaking caps), which was then replaced and its performance got even better.

how did you determine the ECU malfunctioned (the leaking caps?), did you get an error code?

No errors
one of the symptoms was that it turned A/C or something related to the AC 'ON' randomly - i just dont remember the detail
and upon inspection, leaking caps were found inside the ECU
