If I have been driving for half an hour or more, and turn off the ignition, it won't start. If I wait 20 mins or more, it starts like nothing happened, or if I just drive it for 10 or 15 mins, and it doesn't get too hot . . . no probs. Any ideas, it's driving me crazy, and my mechanic.

Is it a fuel pump or relay problem, or is there a sensor which will not allow it to start when hot? I have gotten gas at different places to make sure it wasn't fuel . . . thanks for any help! (FYI, even though I'm a newb . . . I have searched the forum)

I remember reading about a problem like this before, but I forgot the solution! When you say it won't start, do you mean the starter will not crank? If so, it is the starter contacts / plunger. If the starter cranks but the engine just won't start running, this could be the EFI relay harness.

Mine does something very similar. . . It usually only happens when I'm offroading, sitting in one place and/or moving very slowly for long periods. Pop the hood, let it breathe and it starts fine. . . in my case it cranks but just won't quite start..

Not the started

Nah, the starter keeps turning over, so it's not the typical starter, alternator, or loose spark plug connection problem you'd think to check first. It's weird, basically she runs fine, then when you cut her off, she needs to either cool off, or something, which only takes 10-15 mins, then she starts up as if nothing ever happened - no ryhme nor reason.

Thanks, please advise.

Reread 2nd half of my post

If you have a 91 or 92 you have the EFI relay issue. This is easily repaired by replacing the EFI relay with the beefier aftermarket one or replacing the wiring in the fusebox in the engine compartment.

You can quickly confirm this the next time you have the issue. Simply pull the fusebox cover when you are unable to start it and burn your finger on the overloaded relay. :) That is how I found it. Search for "EFI relay" or "EFI" on this forum and there should be plenty of information if you go back a year or so.

I have spare EFIs in my glovebox for this situation but I have not had any issues regardless of temp since I upgraded the wires.

Good Luck!

This thread has the spare I spoke about.

Carry a spare ignition wire and plug with you. Next time it happens, pop one of the wires out of the dist. cap and put the spare in. Then have someone turn the ignition/crank the engine and see if it's getting spark. If it is, then you most likely have the relay problem. Carrying one of those if you have a 91 or 92 seems to be a requirement. If there is no spark then test for voltage at the coil. No voltage then ignition relay/short/break. If there is voltage then try another coil. Coils will display this behaviour when weak. A weak coil will ignite a rich mixture and not a lean one. Makes no sense but is fact.

Fixed It!

Followed the advice of one of the first replies . . . I went to the yota dealer this morning, and perfect timing: when I cut her off, she wouldn't start again. Went in, spent 12 bucks on the relay, walked out, pulled out the piping hot one, put in the new one, worked a treat. Next weekend I will rework the wiring which you guys say is the real issue. I have found the relevant info in the forum to go ahead and do it.

And, I tell you what, first time here, it saved me a lot of time, hassle, and money, I really appreciate the advice. No one patronized me as a newb, all the advice was solid. Really appreciate it, thanks!
