Thanks Allen, just heading out into the garage to get busy and closer to completion...
How did you end up painting your wheels? Rattle can? HVLP? Color? I've got a set of 60 wheels I want to do something with, and since I need some 33" or bigger on the 40, now's the time to do something with them....

I've used the Duplicolor wheel paint on my FJC and thought the results were great. However, finding it this time around proved difficult. So, I opted for some rattle can, "tractor" paint from Car Quest @ $5 a can instead of the over $7 a can for the Duplicolor. I used 3 cans but really didn't need that much, got at least 4 good coats of the white. Only time will tell how well they hold up. But, I will say that the guys at the tire shop that mounted the tires didn't screw up the paint despite it only being 24 hours old...
good to know. I have some fj60 wheels too and I was having a hard time wanting to pay 50-60$ a piece for powdercoating. I may try that route.
Looks good....... I hope Santa will bring me one for Xmas..... I've decided as soon as I finish school in 2 years i'm going to take some welding classes and start my project.
Yeah, I was waiting on your quote, it's was going to run even more up here... with blasting and everything it was like $700... cha-ching!
I found 2 other places here that I am going to try to see what they will charge. I will keep you posted.

My thanks go to you. I didn't even hear that "noisy" diesel leave this morning.
I'll post pics up soon of all your excellent ideas and fabrications on this project. I just returned from picking up the small parts that should help finish this up.
Again, your feedback and help is extremely valuable to see this thing completed.

Tomorrow is paint day. I plan on getting the frame/fenders painted before I put the sheet metal on. I hope to get the skin on it in the afternoon and it will be time to do the finish work. Its getting close...

Well, I had a couple relatively minor set backs. Nothing but having to rethink things and change plans for things when I get help from my friends. Its what I get for getting help and listening to their feedback. It sucks when they are right also. I really have to thank Barry for some great ideas as well as Greg and Ramon for slowing me down, making sure I stick to plan and not rush things.
But, its almost done. Today the fab work is finished and it was time for paint. I used the "Raptor" bed liner, coating the tubing/frame in black. The sheet metal/rear doors will be color to help show off the tubing. Here are a couple pics showing some progress...

I think the prefab fenders look great as is, and you can certainly beef those with tube later. I think you can hammer/cut the lower edge of those fenders to blend in with the tube bends(fenders tubes) pretty easily.
Were you able to mount the gas struts? Looks like the hinge worked out pretty well.

The fenders had to be "opened up" a bit since the angles were too acute and yes, it will be easy to put some tubing around them when I get back.
Yes, the hinge is great. I opened it up and tried to twist/torque it sideways like we discussed and its solid. No worries on the side hills, even with the tent on top. I didn't mount the struts yet, want to put the sheet metal in first.
Hopefully, things go well tomorrow and I can post some pics of it nearly completed...

That thing is coming along great. After seeing this thing being done i might have to build my own one day also. Notice i said one day as there is too much on my plate right now already.

Thanks Greg, on both accounts. Yes, getting all the prep work done before skinning it was the right way to go. Here are a couple pics of today's progress. Got it skinned with 16g steel. Had to hand form the corners and got it all secured in place, only to take it all off again for paint. I hope to get the second coat of paint on in the morning and re-install everything then hitting the road for Ouray.
I like the steel look, almost would prefer to just bead blast the skin and clear coat it for protection. But, since I already have the bed liner set up, I'll go ahead and paint it anyway...
