I tried searching several ways but came up with nothing. Does anyone (or CAN anyone) rebuild the large-cap 2F distributor? I have one in my '73 FJ40 and I don't want to get rid of it, but it's over 40 years old and, I suspect, a bit tired.

I bet you can do a pretty good job at it. There's not much to one. It runs on ball bearings, they might like some fresh grease. Maybe a new advance stop bushing, maybe new springs. Does the vacuum advance work? Clean it up and run it.

Edit: search in 60 tech for dizzy threads

Large cap as in late model 2F with the dented side cover? Jim C for sure and he can recurve it for the specifics of your motor.

Pretty simple...I've done a few just for my sanity. I strip it down, brake clean it out, new distributor stop pin bushing, very the mechanical weights move smoothly and springs aren't broken, remove the advance bearing assembly, strip, clean, regrease. Clean the remaining parts, set airgap, new cap and rotor then test the vacuum diaphragm.

Lastly new o-rings for dizzy shaft and cap. Pair with new oem plug wires and plugs.

Many of the parts are shared with 20/22R distributors and many others.

Have you replaced the shaft bearing?

I swapped some parts in my old Delco along time ago, not all that hard. I think I need to make a new bushing to take the play out of the shaft. I have a Unimat SL1000 that should be up for the bushing task, might be able to do the shaft too.

What distributor are you running? I have quite a few new Toyota distributor bushings (from other Toyota models) that I have used to replace F engine distributor bushings. I can send you one if you'd like.

Mine is a Delco from like a 67 Valiant. I'll just make the bushing to fit the shaft after I polish it. I do appreciate the offer tho - thanks.

Not yet only because the 3-4 I’ve done were all nice - just filthy/crusty under the cap.

I might yank this spare 20r dizzy apart and see if it has a bushing or bearing, would be good practice.

It has a bushing, I've torn several down. It would be good practice though.

The only early (pre-'91) bearing equipped Toyota distributors I've run across are from the 6-cylinder 4M engines used in the Corona Mark II and Cressida. I harvested about 30 new bearings that are the same as the bearings in the FJ60 distributors. I still have about 28 available.

That’s good to know! Have you had any luck x-ref’ing the bearing to a current nachi/koyo?

A Guru once told me that he was able to source bushings for the earlier dizzys from McMaster-Carr...

I used this bushing
