Land Cruiser vs Cyber Truck

I don't need a bulletproof vehicle but want something that feels slightly armored, like a tank, in case of an accident. Truly armored vehicles are horrendeous to drive.

The not having a brake pedal bothers me unless full self driving becomes available.

I saw a figure online that 75% off bad emissions US produces comes from cars.
 
After the initial shock and divisive styling, there's a fair number of people really loving this thing and putting down deposits. There's 7 people in my circle of acquaintances. All coming from different car circles interestingly enough. If there's any commonality, I'd say many are what I consider vehicle enthusiasts. No work truck owners, but perhaps that's not the circle I'm in. Most ordered the high trim, with a couple mid-trim cybertrucks.

So who orders these things? Anecdotally:

1) Myself as a LX and Porsche 911 Turbo owner - Potentially replace LX, or (gasp) both?
2) Business professional with Ford Raptor on 37s, fully decked - avid camper
3) Another Raptor owner - avid camper
4) Small business owner FJ Cruiser fully overlanded
5) Engineer female converted ambulance owner that's an avid bike racer, wants something great and efficient to transport to race days, with power, compressed air, etc.
6) City slicker architect that owns an IS250
7) Professional upper management Range Rover owner

@slipkid13 , thanks for your handouts. I've leveraged it twice now. $10k rebate for my first EV 9 years ago. $4.5k recently. The cybertruck will be sold on its own merits and value. None of the orders above are classic blue collar work truck types, so Ford has nothing to worry about. I'm an open minded enthusiast (fanboi thank you), and have very much enjoyed the variety of excellence out there. At least you have good taste to likewise enjoy the LX. I'd encourage you to branch out and try other experiences too.

I think it’s cool that they came out with a cyber truck and that it’s different.
But, I think the deposit amount is so small it tells us nothing about the true intention of many(most?) of the buyers.

I question the whole release as I think it was the definition of smoke and mirrors, for example:

It’s $100 bucks and fully refundable. That’s 0.25% of the purchase price, or similar to Apple charging $2 deposit for the new iPhone.

We are on our 2nd Tesla. S then 3. Really, like others have mentioned (and I have before) when you drive an EV everything else feels ancient, Internal combustion is not the future. Yes it looks odd, yes I thought it was a joke at first during the review. But the specs are amazing! And I tend to be very function over form and love the idea of stainless steel and no paint. The air suspension is really the only thing that is disappointing me at this point. Anyway I put a deposit down for the triple motor 500 miles $69k version so what ~3+ years we will see.

Because Elon likes to sling the BS and most people fully buy in. In the era of social media this tactic for the general public works, just look at our last US presidental election... and probably the next one....

I drove my buddies model 3. It was nice, but it didn't change my perspective on ice. He likes it a lot but he now prefers his wife's Audi A5. He is also extremely frustrated with Tesla's service. He needed a new bumper and had to wait an insane amount of time, like 6 months or so for it. I am sure logistics will be worked out eventually but still frustrating.

The other thing I didn't care for and this not Tesla specific is the control manufacturers have over the vehicle. The more wired n online they are the less you actually own it. I suspect the future is a subscription model like software has adopted. Don't pay, well you now "own' a brick with 4 wheels.

This is a shorter version of what I was trying to say a couple pages back. Elon Musk has to be extremely pleased right now... because whether negative or positive… The entire automotive world is talking about this thing.

I think what’s going on UNDER the hood is real.
But externally this go round? -he’s mostly having fun with us.

But I just got back from LA hadn’t been there in over 25 years and holy ... the traffic is insane... I don’t want to drive my car there. Every person I saw in a Tesla on AP sitting back reading seemed pretty content sitting in stop and go for 3/4 of their life.

Even though I’m in San Diego...the 8th largest city in the US, and just a couple hours south...
...I **HAAAAATE** driving in & around LA! It’s nuts...whether in a Tesla or otherwise.
But I do see the value in some of the auto-drive doodads in Tesla’s... Might be pretty dang nice when dealing with Driver Hell (LA). 😬

I have helped fire men use the jaws of life to remove my best friend from his Honda Civic which I watch fold literally like paper origami in his high speed accident. We thought my friend was dead because he was laying unconscious (scariest moments of my life) and he had to spend 6 months in the hospital. As a teenager I had my share of high speed accidents in a number of BMWs and I walked out of every single one. I have always preferred heavier 6000+ lb vehicle tanks over low weight vehicles since. I am the opposite with motorcycles where I like super light weight after having been down on pavement a few times and keep a philosophy to go faster than those around me to keep away from other vehicles.

Vehicle rescue will be an interesting problem. I will say this for Tesla.. as much as I view their vehicles and strategy as gimmicky, they take educating first responders about the intricacies of their vehicles seriously. They can’t quite go to the level of donating cars for us to cut up, but I guarantee some of us in the business of chopping up cars to get people out will find ways to test our skills and video/present those findings for others.

You don’t need to be in a stainless tesla to present problems for our usual tools and methods. Many cars now are coming with hardened steel in the B pillars that shrug off our cutters.. so we’ve adapted and have special tools for the job. The problem is a few people were trapped and we weren’t able to get them out quickly as we learned this is a problem.

If I had to guess Tesla will probably work directly with the firefighting industry to educate us.

If you guys are curious and want to see one solution we have for those hardened b-pillars look up the T-Rex metal saw by Unifire. Also our standard hydraulic cutters are getting better.. and even crazier still, the new generation battery rescue tools have surpassed a lot of hydraulics in power and capability. Just like electric cars, firefighting technology is advancing as well.

I work with first responders. Tesla gave 2 cars to Anchorage fire in Alaska to cut up so I’m guessing that they have done the same for many much more accessible cities in the lower 48.

Spent one day in San Diego, even years ago I liked it way better than LA being from the mountains. We went to sea world and had a steak at Cowboy star before heading back to LA.
