Hi,
My FJ40 engine seems weak when going up hill.
The engine was rebuilt last year as well as the carb .
Could it be only carb adjustment?

I have a 1984 FJ40, 2F engine 6 cylinders.

Maybe it is normal. I am not sure how strong the engine should be but it feels weak to me.
Let me know of anything I could do to improve its performance.
I would like to keep it original first before. If not then I could upgrade things.

Where are you located?

Is the vacuum-actuated secondary opening? You can try the paperclip trick such as pictured here (click the link):

Other diagnostics to check would be engine compression, valve adjustment, vacuum readings, and timing. If those are good then you should have reasonable power, though remember that the engine design is 40+ years old at this point so it won't be anything like a new vehicle.

A compression test is a simple effort that should let you know if the engine is basically sound. If you have not adjusted the valves since the rebuild, check them now. Compression testing and valve adjustments are covered in a Haynes manual and are relatively simple, even if you're not a mechanic by trade.

What size tires are you running?

I have the same rig, same year, 5 speed, 4:11 and plenty of power with 33" tyres at 7,000'. If you're in Australia you likely have points. a GM HEI distributor is an easy swap and really wakes that engine up.

If his truck is a USA vehicle it would have come with 3.70's not 4.11's.

big difference with 33" tires.
