After watching my tailgate carpet slowly deteriorate over the past few years from camping, using it as a work bench and our dogs I wanted a solution. After a few months of trial, errors and prototyping I had a final version. These are CAD drawn from the factory carpet panel, beveled rear edge that allows the gate trim piece to lay flat and close with ease. Router cut and radius face edge.

The big kicker was adjusting the mounting holes away from the factory mounting holes. This allows the user to remove the cut board and replace the carpet without any issue. Hardware is included and the screws are stainless and fit recessed. Being cutting board material, it is only available in white. Easy to clean and textured for a non slip surface.

  • Use painters tape to mark each side of the panel.
  • Remove your carpet panel with a plastic ABS pry tool.
  • Position cutting board on gate, using tape to center.
  • The carpet sat flush against the edge, move the board down 3/16" and then mark the mounting holes with a spring punch making sure the panel does not shift.
  • Remove panel, using a short stubby step drill, drill each hole to 7/16" and vacuum any metal shavings.
  • Install hardware into board, attach the toggle nuts to the screws and flip over.
  • Push the board into place and each toggle nut through each hole.
  • With an electric screws gun or drill with a phillips bit, start at one end and snug from one end to the other while lifting the board until it lays flay.
  • Once all are snug, you can adjust it and then gently tighten by hand into place.
  • Enjoy!

Looks good. Was this from an existing group buy or an upcoming one? Did the toggle bolts provided not work with the existing carpet clip holes?

After I priced the LabRak and due to only offered in white, I'm going to tackle this on my own.

The toggle bolts do not fit in the factory retaining clip holes, nor did I design them to. We wanted the carpet panel able to be re installed without any issues.

The toggle nuts have 180# pullout each, its not going anyplace once installed.

It's only comes in white as the FDA cutting boards are only available in white.

It's a fun project, you'll enjoy it.

It looks likes great, simple mod. Thanks for the info, I see your 25% coupon now. If it were in black I'd probably be in... I will likely be approaching that price with material, a new cutting tool, and hardware I want to use.

Just out of curiosity, where did you see that white is only approved for FDA standards? I read some of their literature online and it doesn't speak to color and a lot of the on-line retailers are advertising various colors as "FDA approved"). It doesn't affect me as I doubt I'll be putting raw food directly on it.

On the color, I believe it was a sheet issue or stock for table tops. As you know you can get various colors for fish, veggies, beef and so on in various sizes

I went directly to a manufacture and white was it with the texture. Either way, I'd only stock white due to sheer cost to get them to the ship that did the cutting. Plus, I want to know of its dirty and when its clean.

I'd like my bumper to match my argent trim, but black the only option and I'm happy with it.

Seriously considering this for my 100.

What have you been able to use it for so far? Fish? I assume dogs in & out? Firearms table? Can you set a stove on it and cook or will that melt it? Baby changing table?

How has clean up been?

What do you think the longevity of it will be? Will it be something that will have to be replaced every few years?

How long did it take to install?

Next batch put some holes for drop in cup holders!

I don't see it anywhere, but what is the thickness of the sheet?

You should definitely consider making some black ones (if it's worth your time of course). I certainly can't speak for everyone, but I wouldn't use it exclusively as stood prep area, it would just be better for me to have a more rugged tailgate and something I can wipe off after a weekend.... White would look out of place in my truck.
