Hey all,

I recently stumbled across this site looking for info on kzj78's because here in Australia there was only a few imported, so there is little to no info locally (although toyota list parts for them, which is a bonus) and I'm one of the lucky one's to own one :) Although it's not registered at the moment :frown:

I do have a few questions though, I do eventually want to put a snorkel on it, can some one please tell me an exact other cuiser models will bolt up ( i doubt i will be able to ask for a 78 series one)

I also would like to lift it ~4" or more, I came across a thread on here that says you can use 80 series rear coils in the front of the prado, which gives ~4" of lift (although the spring rate is different), what then do people use in the rear? is there any other model cruisers that uses the same diameter coil & a similar spring rate? And what length shock do people then use?

Does any one know what other models share the same diff centres? I'm planning on running 35"s in the future but i want to lower the diff ratio's to take a bit of the strain of the box and keep low range reasonable low. I know you can change the transfer ratio's but i think diffs maybe a cheaper option, depending on availability.

No doubt i'll have heaps more questions when I finally get it on the road, hopefully not long now, just need to sort out tyres and the injector pump (going in on monday to be fixed :)) any info would be greatly appreciated

do a search, there are a lot of parts that are obsolete for that vehicle already.
nice looking truck
you live in Oz, contact Dobinson and get their lift. sweet lift.

Thanks, Luckily you can't see the bonnet & roof in that photo, the clear is stuffed & has some hail damage :frown:, but i'll respray that in the new year.

Yeah i'm in Australia, well actually in little old Tasmania, I believe that i've got the only Prado wagon in the state :) there's only one other one that i know of but that's been cut down to a dual cab

I had a look at the dobinson catalog the other night, the highest lift they advertise is 60mm, but I've sent them an email asking for a quote and weather they can do a 100mm (4 inch) lift.

Basically i want to get mine looking as tall as kbushnz's because thats one tuff looking unit ;)

Hi, I am in Malaysia, quite a number of your type of vehicle here.

The 80 series springs and shocks are used to gain the 4" lift.

Tough dog, peddlers, OME use to carry the 4" lifts.

I have tough dog heavy duty springs in the rear, 80 series in the front and using 80 series koni shocks.

How can you get 80 series coils in the front?? They are too big in diameter ??
Do you have p/n's and or photo's Or am I missing something...

I have 80 series OME front coils used in the "rear" of my KZJ78.... And custom coils in the front.

Thanks Tassie KZJ78... Its evolved over several years...

When going to 35's I used diffs from the LJ78....the 2.4 version.. Exact same running gear.
With 4.8 diff ratios... Now its all factory re speedo....
They bolt straight in....Got whole pumpkins....Not just the ring gears and Pinions...
Note ring and pinions on the 2.4 trucks wont fit into the other diff housings... Odd ball ones.

The spring holders are 'custom' as you say, to cater for the diameter.

Ahhhh so you need to do some rework... Not a straight drop in job.
Thanks....
Photo's?

Thanks for the info guys, greatly appreciated

+2 on pics for the custom coil perches

No worries ;) who's doesn't :p

The only problem with this is that the LJ78's are probable less common that the kzj78's :(

So there is no other diff centres that are the same as the kzj ones?

Just out of interest are lj78's common in new zealand? If so whats the going rate for the diffs? (if you know, i may look into getting some sent over)

Change the ring and pinion gear, no need for new axles.

Try www.locktup4x4.com.au. They carry the ring and pinion...under hilux solid axle front.

Yes ring and pinion change is an option... Just need to factor in the cost of swapping them out with a good diff shop.
I have purchased ring and pinions and found that Aussie and NZ suppliers were way over priced.
I got mine from the States.....At 1/2 the price.. Also the USD is low against NZ and AUS...

gotoy, Thanks for the photo's..

Off the shelf suspension is available in Aussie or NZ for the KZJ78..... Probably not as high as mine but wouldn't make that much difference.
Try Traxion in NZ (EFS shocks and coils) or Dobsons in Aussie.

Hey, has any one ever had really low clearance between the front brake calipers & other than factory rims?
The reason i ask is because i sat a set of 15 x 7 sunny's on while a set of tyres are being fitted today and i was looking at the clearance between the caliper and the rim and there's like a ~3mm gap between the two.

Where did you get the R&P's from in US?

The 4.88's might be a little too high. I presently have the 4.88's but changing over to 4.56's to see if any better....by the chart it is supposed to be. Had to change the whole pumpkins as the R&P's wont fit in the 4.88's.

With the 3.0L 1KZTE KZJ78 the 4.88 and 35 inch tyres work out and return it to factory speedo readings.
However the extra weight of the bigger tyres does load up the motor / trans a little more.

You can get 4.88 r and p for the diffs off the shelf to replace the standard 4.3's for the KZJ78.
The LJ78 factory 4.88 r and p wont fit into any thing but another LJ78 diff housing as its an odd ball one in the Toyota series. The carrier bearings are off set differently to the KZJ series and Hilux. Found out the hard way when I scored a set of 4.88 from a LJ78 and wanted to swap rear r and p into my 4.3 e locker... wouldnt fit too big a gap...(8-10mm) so had to get std 4.88 from the states.

Note: You cant get aftermarket r and p's for LJ7X with factory 4.88's.. (odd ball carrier)

At the time they were on special and only cost me $360 NZD landed.. Local off the shelf cost in NZ was $600.

I got mine from here for my KZJ78 !
Toyota V6 Differential Ring & Pinion Sets

You need 1 x normal for rear and 1x Reverse cut for front.

Yes, I am fitting complete new pumpkins along with the 4.56 ratio's. Not new, from broken down import japan model. I had no idea 4.56 r&p would not fit into the 4.88 housings.

Thanks for that site. You are quite correct, one or two of the Ozzie sites carry the same r&p's but almost twice the cost in some cases.

Thanks for the link,

are the prices listed for one end only or is it for both front & rear r&p's?

also did you go for the standard ones or the high performance ones?

No they are for one end.
You will see them mention a reverse cut ring and pinion in the ratio required. This is for your front end.
I used std ones.... no issues to date... Mine was based on price.....
Cheap Kiwi.....

Its a rear diff.... So used all the time...

finally got my diesel pump back the other day :) not real happy with what i had to pay (probably could have nearly bought 2 second hand ones for what i paid) but hopefully it'll last a very long time.

any way we got it running and i remember that the hub lock light flashes on the dash constantly, does any one know why? My old man jacked it up when i first got it home and engaged 4 wheel drive and apparently everything was working fine (haven't been able to test on a slippery surface yet, because it's still not registered :frown:)

Hey Tassie did you end up getting your 78 on the road? I'm just at the beginning of the same project. Motor fully rebuilt and about to go back in.
