Hey all, with my new engine coming together well, the thought of a new radiator to cool it seems like a very good idea. After tons of searching, it looks as though several performance aftermarket alternatives exist to replace the factory units. One is bolt in, one will require some fabrication to fit. Both of these have the welded on aluminum end tanks and oven brazed cores.

PWR of Austrailia produces an aluminum hi-po radiator for various gas and diesel 80 series Land Cruiser applications. It is currently not offered in the USA... so I don't have pricing. Tundra radiators run $599 list. Street price is around $500. I can't find to much more info... sorry. This might be the best hi-po alternative for most folks, being what should be a straight drop in.

The second unit is the Koyo unit, it took a while to track down... it will not be a bolt in, but should fit well. The application is for the 93 - 98 Twin Turbo Supra w/ manual transmission. The 2 core unit measures 15 3/4" x 29 1/8" x 2 1/16", and the stock FZJ80 3 core measures 16 13/16" x 28 1/4 x 2". Retail is close to the PWR, street price $400ish, ebay for $315. Other good things, the inlet and outlet are in the correct positions along with being the right size, the drain is the right spot, it has a mount for a temperature activated fan switch. The not so good, cap is offet to the wrong side (it does take a Toyota cap, though), and so is the overflow hose. There is no auto tranny cooler hook up (not an issue for me)Not sure if there is a provision for the tiny upper bypass(?) hose.

Anyway, good or bad, they should be two quality alternatives to the OEM.

Why not the 16400-66040 93-94 three row?

Perfect fit, correct hose fitment, ETC and a "street price" of around 415 bucks.......

Ron Davis Racing out of Phoenix makes an all aluminum radiator for 80's REALLY nice quality. It was not too hard to install, tranny lines were the only dif. from stock. I have had mine for almost two years now. It improved cooling quite a bit over the stock (97) radiator.

My 97 received a 93/4 three core Toyota rad from Cdan and has handled several minutes of absolute full throttle pulling for several minutes at a time. Tis an odd feeling to literally be pushing the gas pedal to the floor for that long. Anyhow, no cooling issues.

Koyo bling bling... undecided if this will be the unit that ends up in the Cruiser as the lower hose outlet is not the proper size... suppose I could change it. I'm willing to bet it will cool better than the 3 core brass.. it also holds .75 quart more coolant than the brass unit.

Really nice rad's I will agree, but at $8-bills and change with out electric fans I think your kidding yourself and paying for the name spray'd on the fins...

Just my 2 cents

I had this aluminum one made for my 97 several years ago by C&R Racing in Indianapolis (Nascar etc.). I had to send my stock one back and forth to get the pattern worked out for the mounts and outlets. They save the info under my name so I can just call and they can make another. If you have any interest in this one, hit me with a PM and you can use my pattern. I have no idea of current costs.

A couple of other thoughts. With this rad and maybe other custom ones; a custom shroud might have to be made. Another thing is the tranny cooler. The cooler they used for mine was from a GM. I don’t think Toyota sells the tranny cooler for the lower rad tank separately so this company at least would need one from your old rad or whatever. I don’t know what the other companies use. My tranny did get hot a couple of times with the GM cooler when plowing through snow going up a mountain, so I am just increasing the size of the aux. cooler and a couple of other things to compensate.

8 bills? For a ron davis?

Here's my quote from Ron...

"I own a 94 Toyota Landcruiser w/ the 4.0 inline six. I would like to know
what you have to offer and the prices for this application with and without
electric fans."

Thanks

-Matt

Response...

"THE DROP IN REPLACEMENT FOR THE TOYOTA LAND CRUISER IS 792.00 PLUS SHIPPING.
THIS IS THE RAD ONLY NO FANS OR SHROUD."

Metal prices  .....3 years ago it was only $550.00. The factory shroud will bolt on but needs some minnor modifications to work well.

The smaller the radiator the less coolant you have to pull temp out of if the car does get hot, though it will take slightly longer to get hotter.

Fit the bolt in CD recommended, and spend the change on a new viscous fan hub and blades, and make sure they sit properly in the shroud, this is alway way more important than the radiator being 3, 4 or 5 core for cooling.

Surface area is also way more important than the amount of rows, but only if you can pull the air through the surface area.

I ran a copper copy of the plastic tanked unit on my 80, which was 400hp 4.5 turbo, and it never had overheating issues.
