Having had the misfortune of the lower steering arm studs shearing, if any one else has this problem, you can make up a little tool out of the old sheared off stud (see image)
I had two sheared off studs in the knuckle housing, so the full strip down was needed.
When I drilled the broken studs out and as the drill bit dug in, it screwed the offending stud out into the housing, which was handy, but when I tried to screw the new studs into the housing, I could not get the new studs to start in the holes where the broken studs had come from as the first 2 threads were knackered, and the new stud kept trying to go in crooked, I know the threaded holes are 12mm but here in the UK I could not find a suitable tap to clear the thread, standard 12mm thread is I think 2mm pitch here and I think the thread in the knuckle is 1.50mm pitch, I had access to 1.25mm pitch taps but that was to fine.
So what I did was to weld an 8mm x 30mm screw to the old broken stud that had come out of the housing, I also cut with a hack saw a slice out of the thread, so it acted as a tap to clear any debris in the hole your tapping out, obviously you have to screw the made up thread clearing tool from the inside of the knuckle housing, out towards the damaged thread to clear it,
It workd really well and cleared the burrs, but remember to add some sort of anti seize paste while doing it.
It worked for me and just wanted to pass on any info.

Forgot to add pic

Here is the little thread clearing tool, sorry about the pic quality, as I took pic using my mobile phone

Necessity is the mother of all good inventions! Very satisfying, especially when it works.

Unfortunately I have never had the pleasure of any acquaintance with him. I am not sure where in the UK he is, may be the list of members may tell me more about that. I do not even know how many UK members there are. Perhaps snowwolf warior knows him.

Rick,
I looked everywhere on my servers and on my various web sites and I can't find that picture but I *know* that I have it somewhere....

I have a bitmap copy of it that I can't upload.

How do I convert it to a jpeg?

Dance around singing Christmas carols.. :D

Just open it in some photo editing/viewing software, if you have WinXP then even Paint will do it (Start->Run->mspaint) just open the file then do a Save As and select jpeg file type.

Use paint

If you are running windows open the bitmap with paint, then "save as" and select (.jpeg) as "save as type".

 Here it is....:D

Damn Dan you trying to make me need glasses..............

The image was very small and enlarging it made it very grainy. so :flipoff2: :D At least I had one that I could find......:D

making the tool was clever and lotsa fun I bet, but I would be rather surprised if one could not find an appropriate metric tap in the UK if we can readily get them here, the last English units holdout country in the world...

tap

I have found nothing easy to get if it's not standard, standard 12mm is 2.00mm pitch am sure the thread into the knuckles is 1.50mm and the nut end thread is 1.25mm definitly not easy to get the 1.50mm here in the UK at short notice and if the left hand 4mm drill I got here in the UK is anythink to go by, as it cost me £10

There's an IT old saying.... Standards are wonderful because there are so many to choose from.
