How can you check if you car came equiped with a keyless entry option ,, i have a 92 landcruiser (80 series) .. i just bought it and was not provided with a remote

Look under the front driver seat for a box. Also you would have something on the dash that says security. It's blurry but the top left item. It has a sensor and an led. At least thats how you tell in a 97.

I'm 99% sure that keyless was only an option for '92 plus. Although crappy aftermarket keyless entry was very common for 91/92, cause both mine had them terribly spliced into the trucks wiring harness.

ok ... i did see a unit below my driver seat which says security system but it is just lying there with all the wires unattached! i wonder why ,,, shall i try attaching them .. will it cause any problems?

Hmmmm, thats a difficult question. Are the wires cut or are the connectors just dis-connected.

Probably was disconnected for a reason, know way to tell if it was for that unit or a different problem. Do you have the FSM electrical wiring book?

You wouldn't be able to tell it works with out the correct remote. Maybe it didn't work, but kept the doors locked???

If you can find a buddy with a similar vehicle and borrow his remote, you might want to try connecting it.

It will be hard to tell unless you get into if its better to get a new one or fix that one.

I would not hook up any wires until you were absolutely sure where the belong.

you might want to get yourself a test meter and pay 10 bucks here to DL the many pages of info - techinfo.toyota.com/

thanks! i will not connect the wires then... i guess i will just get an aftermarket keyless entry installed ... i am getting one for $110 installed

I wouldn't just abandon the unit under the seat yet; someone may have just unplugged it because they lost the remotes. I'd pull the box out and see what it is...there are only 5 million keyless entry fobs on eBay.

that is what i am thinking ... why should i buy an aftermarket kit when i have this ... how much would a FOB cost? is there a place where i can just go and test ? does pep boys or autozone sell landcruiser factory remotes? I have attached the pic of the disconnected unit from under the drivers seat.... what is the worst that could happen if i attach the unit ?

Your flash is blocking the FCC ID number, but if you search eBay for keyless entry fobs you might find one that matches that ID. I would guess the worst thing that could happen if you plug it in is your truck could expode. Just kidding. Probably blow a fuse. I don't know much about that alarm but if its vintage 1992, you probably will want to consider something newer with more features.

That is a TVSS unit. There is a user manual for this unit on my web site.

None of the "factory" alarms (actually port or dealer installed) are covered in any of the Toyota manuals. It's not in the FSM, it's not in the EWD. The closest that is available is an installation manual and I only have that for the RS3000 unit.

I have the factory alarm and the remote will set it but is won't lock and unlock the doors. Is there a way to reprogram it.

I will repeat....

You do not have a factory alarm, you have a port installed or a dealer installed alarm. There are a number of them including the TVSS and the RS3000 being the most common because they were port installed by Toyota USA. Gulf States Toyota (TX, LA, MS, AL, GA, FL I think) installed a different alarm(s) in the same years.

You will need to determine which alarm you have and get the appropriate manual from my web site. I have hard copies of a few of the dealer/GST alarms but haven't gotten around to scanning them. If you can't figure out which one you have then post up a picture of the ECU (usually under the driver seat), the fob, and the dash LED thingie. We'll try to help.

The picture on the dash looks like the above picture. Under the drivers seat is a metal box with a blue cup of liqid fasten to it. I assume it is a motion sensor. any help would be appreciated.

thanks,

Beowulf - Toyota did not have anything BUT the Dealer/Port installed TVSS and then RS3000 system from 1991-1997 on the Land Cruiser series.

Factory installed remote systems were not available until the 100 series with the 1998 model remote/key combo.

The 91-94 would use the single button TVSS, 95 with the pear shaped 2 button TVSS, and 96-97 would use the BLACK RS3000 remote.

All 3 remote units above are 100% interchangeable and programmable to the 91-97 keyless equipped vehicles.
