My wife and I just found out last night that her father has been diagnosed with esophageal cancer. That is basically throat cancer. He is fairly young at 57 and has been fighting acid reflux for most of his life. Since so many people with what they call "Barrett's Esophagus" end up with cancer he has been taking medicine for over 7 years and receives monthly and yearly checkups to make sure that it never turned to cancer.

We just found out the news, but we are fairly certain he will have to have major surgury in order to rid and prevent any future spread. If anyone in the community has any advice or first hand experience with this, I would appreciate any help you can offer.

I am sorry to hear that. My Stepdad had that cancer about 3 years ago. It is a long process for recovery but they found it soon enough. He is OK now but has learned to live with a smaller stomach. His dad my stepgrandfather passed away from the same disease. It really is a rare cancer, It really shocked us that it seemed hereditary for my stepfathers family. But I hope it goes well. It is treated much better now compared to when my grandafther had it.

Sorry to hear that Jeremy - that "C" word always makes the world stand still - it's amazing how well we are able to address it with the medical advances that have been made - dad and mom still going strong after prostate, breast, uterine cancers - will keep him in our thoughts and prayers

That's terrible Jeremy. I will keep y'all in my thoughts an prayers. I deal with reflux as well but have been on Nexium for some time now. hopefully I will not have to go through what your father-in-law is going through. My neighbor died last year from what you have described. It didn't take long for it to get the best of him and he was a tough guy. Hopefully y'all will have better results.

I am typing this from a hotel at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, FL which is supposed to be a world renowned cancer clinic. We didn't have much luck with the Dr's at the VA so we are here for a second opinion. Hopefully we will have some good news tomorrow because at the moment the only options we have been offered is MAJOR surgury. They have some really unique treatments here that we might can do, so we will see what they have to say tomorrow.
