Hi, I have an 83 FJ 40, about 60,000 miles. Just had frame off work done because of some rust ....new brake lines, etc...... The engine was repainted also. It always fired up and ran perfectly before this work. Now that it is back together it isn't running smoothly. The catalytic converter has been removed. There was a heat sensor that ran from the converter. I am not a mechanic. I only work on the truck with a screwdriver(the easy stuff). The mechanic looking at it believes he has checked everything out and thinks it could be this now disconnected sensor causing the trouble. Does anyone know if this might be an issue? Can it function normally without this Catalytic Converter heat sensor?
I know there can be vacuum issues and other minor problems with the reassembly of everything after the paint and frame blasting, was more concerned about the smog stuff.

Would like to keep it stock, but can't find that sensor anywhere.

Thanks,
JamesX

My recollection is that the sensor for that year is merely to indicate if the cat is over temperature from running rich. It is there to minimize the problem with over heating and fires, but I doubt that is is essential for function. There are a lot of vaccum lines that year, so it is easy to misplace one and have it run rough.

I would keep the smog stuff as it is worth more that way and you have a larger market of people who can buy it. 83 FJ40 stuff is often the same as FJ60 stuff, so there is a larger supply of components. Removing it is a lot of work for no gain.

Thanks for the help guys. I want to leave it stock. I'll bring it elsewhere to be looked at.

I'd keep it as stock as possible if I were you. The alternative is a slippery slope.
Aint that the truth! Due to where I live I had to re-smog mine. Finding old working smog stuff isn't cheap. Smog parts are plentiful-- but working smog parts aren't. I got lucky and scored a box of smog stuff from Lee here on MUD. :D

That heat sensor is no longer available. It has nothing to do with how the truck runs and is only there to shut off the air flow to the cat in the event the cat gets too hot.

Put your 40 side by side with an FJ60 to help you make sure that the vacuum lines all go to the right place. My guess is one of them got hooked up wrong and you now have a vacuum leak.

A desmog is possible, but unless you go all the way through it, I would leave it alone.

I'm back. Does anyone know where this hose connects? Coming from the charcoal canister. I see a possible connection (just above and right of hose in pic) in the fire wall. What does it ultimately connect to and do?

That one goes to the vapor separator, above the gas tank, aft of the fuel filler neck.

The fitting on the firewall is the vent for the distributor cap.
