this started out of nowhere and i don't know why. I keep blowing my tail light fuse on my 1980 FJ40. But why?

Look at the schematic in your Factory Service Manual.

Find out what else is on the same fuse/circuit as your tail lamps and start isolating things.

You have a short circuit somewhere. Trace the wires from the fuse block all the way to the tail lights and look for places where bare wire might touch a ground and where anything non-stock may have been added to the circuit.

I was blowing a fuse when the head lights turned on, like others said you have a short, mine was a pinched wire under the dash, when i pushed the clutch in.

Just start chasing wire and you will find it ...

This is just weird. Seriously, other guys with 1980 40 series rigs with the same headlight/tailight fuse blowing weirdness at the same time in different parts of the world... Three days ago I just started blowing my tail light fuse approximately 30 minutes after I turned on my headlights in my 1980 BJ40. Per the wiring diagram the tail lights and the headlights are two separate circuits so I find it weird that I blow my tail light fuse and the headlights cut out. I'll be chasing wire this weekend as this is the third fuse blown in 3 days.:bang:

short

if you have a meter then shoot continuity to ground on the power wire with all the paths discod ie fuse light etc so you are shooting only the wire

see if you can shoot continuity between the headlight circuit and the t/l circuit--wires could b chafing together or you could have 2 seperate probs

if the wires shoot good hook up the lights one at a time and turn them on

shoot/inspect all the components switch, lights etc

let us know what you find:)

So might the front... ;)

Found it. Turns out the under dash light the wires that were up in the dash kept shorting out by touching the body. So i put some electrical tape of the connectors and BAM! Had lights.

Looking through all that stuff sucks, but it is often the only way to find the problem. Being as flexible as Houdini helps.

when i thought all was well...it blew out again. Back to the drawing board!!!!
