So I used tarrif fear as a justification to accelerate by previously planned purchase of a 2025 4th Gen Tacoma. I had planned to go full Trail Hunter, and didn't mind the hydrid but when I actually saw one and that the batter and subwoofer combo did to in cab storage, I decided I didn't like it and comming from a 2017 Taco, I thought I'd miss it. So, after being inspired by @Romer 's build thread, I decided to go TRD-Off Road and "build" a Trail Hunter (hence the copy in the thread title).

I had intended to order one with all the things I wanted but when talking to dealers, I couldn't get any clarity on potential tariff impact other than I could get my deposit back if the price went up. So, I searched for existing Tacomas on lots that were close to what I wanted. I couldn't find anything local and was being told that dealers were tightening up and less willing to send their inventory to other dealers w/o a trade back. I then thought to message Eric Sergeant to see what he had at Ed Martin and if he could do some Trail Hunter "mods" for me. So he found a bronze oxide Offroad with premium package and other things near what I had built myself on the build your own Toyota website at another dealer and worked out a deal to get it. A very fare price under MSRP. The truck came with some things I would not have done but it was close to what I would have spec'd in a custom build. Then, and this is the "lazy man" part, I asked if he could swap out the rear bumper to the ARB one, replace the front grill to the Trail Hunter grill and add a light bar and do the install. Plus he also happened to have a Trail Hunter OEM air compressor that he wanted rid off so he made an offer I couldn't refuse. He also had a set (5) of the bronze 18" Trail hunter wheels, so I added those as well.

Here are some pics of the bumper install:

Plan is to pick up the truck after Cruise Moab.

Future plans are:

1. Delete OEM aluminum running boards and add sliders (thinking CBI). The running boards is one of the items I would not have done.
2. I'll have to do new tires with the 18" TH wheels. Thinking K)3's but not sure.
3. Add Diamondback bed cover. I have one now on my 2017 and love it.
4. As this is the first brand new vehicle I have ever purchased for myself and its a retirement present to myself that I plan to drive for decade ot more as my daily, I'm going full retard and getting it ceramic coated from the get go.
5. I may at some point att real skids. For the immediate future, its not going to see much off road, that's what my 200 is for. It currently has the TRD front plate and a rear diff plate but oddly no tranny/transfer plate. I would have not done any of that if I had built it and spent the money on RCI or similar aluminum skids. I think I'll just pull that stuff off and try to sell them on FB or something.

Nice! I told my dealer to take off any dealer stickers like the white crooked one on your tailgate :)

Similar to my 2024 with the Grille and ARB Rear bumper. You just need the TRD Pro exhaust :)

I went skinny 33's Toyo AT3's. The spare fit better and I was inspired by Tinkers video on wide vs narrow tires

Funny you say that. I texted Eric today and asked that he remove the dealer sticker and not add one of his own. I did tell him I might support a small a “Sergeant Built” sticker if he had one.

nice, got better pictures of the running boards? I might be interested in them, depending on cost and shipping.
I don’t take a great pics. This is what I have:

I don’t mind how they look. If they could function as a slider I’d keep them.

You probably want the diff skid too don’t ya? :)

Weird camera reflections below light bar.

Nice build, sir! I’m glad to see the Taco section getting more action on Mud lately.

Build is complete for now. I’ll go get it after Cruise Moab.

Picked up the new Tacoma today and drove her home. Dealing with Eric Sergeant was fantastic. He’s a solid guy.

Seems like a major upgrade relative to my 2017 OffRoad. The Tech will take a little bit getting used to, but I love the big screen. The driver assist stuff will also take getting used to. When I backed into my driveway with lane assist on it refused to back in close to our Rav. It basically just applied the brakes and wouldn’t let me move. That was fixed by pushing a button, but it’s kind of weird. I need to get used to CarPlay too. It’s OK, but I don’t really like the CarPlay version of the phone apps, I’ll get used to it I’m sure though.

Love the KO3s on the trail Hunter bronze rims. I think she needs a bit of a lift though to get it to look right. I also don’t mind the look of the steps though I still think I’ll put sliders on at some point.

The "nanny tech" on this thing is a bit over the top. I need to spend some quality time with the manual to figure out how to best set it up. I'm trying to keep an open mind and think I can get used to lane departure occasionally correcting my steering and braking but there's a time and a place for that stuff. My garage stall is tight and the park assist alarms go crazy every time I pull in. I wish shutting that off was one button but it is buried in a menu and not a single action to toggle it on or off. I have some stuff just sitting on the back seat and it keeps thinking I've left a baby in the back and alarms go off when I get out of the truck. Then a minute latter the Toyota app messages me to check the back seat and lock the doors. When I start the truck I get a 5 chime alarm of some kind and rear seatbelt light on the dash.

I'm sure all of this is adjustable but holy cow, I thought I bought this truck from Toyota but they seem to still want to drive it for me.

Carista allows you to do that. You get 30 days free isf you cancel, but need a compatible to them reader

I also bought a device covered here Handheld Techstream Alternative Found! - https://forum.ih8mud.com/threads/handheld-techstream-alternative-found.1353455/

This takes care of all Toyotas and works on my Taco and 200 series with no subscription. I had already made the adjustments with Carista (and cancled) But went though and verified the options were there with this device

here are the menus for the taco it provided
