In spite (or despite) my controversial WTB thread causing quite the commotion, justed wanted to share that I have indeed found a used Kazuma for my '94 FZJ80, and I will be installing it this Friday. Following the install, it will get a complete 'operations' check at the Steamboat Ice Track in Colorado with the quattro boys next week ( www.gruppe-q.com ). I hope to report only good things on the Kazuma application, and hopefully get some more insight into the handling of the LC HF2AV in low cf conditions (another controversial thread it would seem).

Thanks to Dan for the tips, and others for the lively discussion with regards to boosting the I6. I look forward to applying my shop experience with boosted audis, to help solve some of the apparent 'known' issues with this specific application.

More to come...

Take good pics and add details on what it takes and it would make a great addition to the FAQ

I am interested in your thoughts or plans for engine managment. Or if you will run any. I am also wondering if the LC will handle larger injectors on the stock ecu. Any thoughts on a piggyback, seperate ECU (TEC II , modine$$$). Will you be dyno testing the setup? Do you have access to a hydraulic 4 wheel dyno?

I look forward to hearing about your development.

Where will this be happening? I'd like to come by and loiter!

is this the one that was for sale in El paso? if it is, good score. ya beet me to it!

KAZUMA INSTALLED - update report

Update Chicago:
Kazuma arrived yesterday, started install at 8pm, finished at 2am. 2 guys drinking a lot of beer (on my tab) and deciding that the TRD instructions should be followed to the letter (we tried several 'jump aheads' and not so short 'shortcuts'). BTW Dan, I got both the IAC and the WOT wiring to string over without issue (nor much extra room either), well, the loom cracking was a PITA, and you have to go almost all the way to the back of the engine to get enough slack.

The TRD fan supplied, exploded on the first rev of the motor, so we put the stocker back in, which should be fine for winter driving. We also noted (twice) that removing the fan shroud without removing the battery and tray could prove frustrating.

The big show stopper was the 304llb/ft crank bolt. Without SST, we put a socket and breaker bar and hit the starter, a charm for the removal. For install, you can't put the SST over the SC pulley anyhow, and no instructions from TRD how to do that... I ended up locking a socket over one of the torque converter bolts and jamming it against the access window while my buddy put the torque on the bolt. I'm sure whomever does this install has their own method, I'll suffice it to say, ours worked.

I haven't really driven it much, but the midrange torque hit is quite noticeable, and it's quieter than my buddy's 4runner SC. I'll have about 2500miles of road time, and 600 track miles (steamboat ice track) in the next 10 days, and I'll report progress. If I have i-net there, I'll post while out there.

More..

Cattledog, most likely not going to do engine management, most likely fuel tuning, I do that all the time on the audis. Fuel pressure and injector sizing. I'd really like to delete that MAF and use a later style venturi type tho.

Alia176 - Would have tapped you for the help, sorry I was late on cking in.

Tacoma FJ - yup, that one is now mine. The guy that sold it was one of the nicest fellow shop owners I've had the pleasure of speaking to. And, the kit was *complete* as you could get, as I only bought a 1.50 plug for the brake booster port.

Enjoy-I know it was a sweet deal:beer:

Scott,

As a low cf driver much of the winter, if you glean any insights into which tire is the out and out champ I'd be interested. One of mine has last year's Michelin SUV Alpins, one has sipped Coopers and my bro in law's just got shod with this year's Michelin studless - can't remember name. Dunno if you/they will do/allow any kind of tire swapping there but thought I'd toss it out as it would be a rare 80 data point for us Northerners to have.

Drive safe!

DO NOT DRIVE IT YET!

The fan WILL hit the bottom ledge of the shroud, at the tank-to-core interface. Get a 16361-65020 fan blade off of a 94 3.0 V6 truck and trim the shroud.

The slight brushing arc that you see in the bottom picture is from the ringed fan. The stock fan is a larger diameter AND it is closer to the radiator.

Kazuma in Steamboat - Update

Cheers from 7200ft all:
Made it to Steamboat without any trouble, and the SC is awesome upgrade, better than expected actually. Dan, the TRD fan had a crack in the outer ring, and it schrapnelled when we started the truck. I put the stocker back in without incident, and had no trouble in terms of fitment. I also did not hook up the throttle heater hose, and it doesn't appear to affect the running of the truck at all.

Doug, I've done tire reports every year for the last 15 at steamboat. Your answer is, it depends. The king for ice and snow is the Blizzack Ice tire (yokohama RSi is really the only other one close). I put on Blizzack DM23's from tire rack (125ea) on thursday, and I find them much better than the car apps. I can give you some of my former tire reports, but they are car apps. On my 4runner I put on MTR and ran them year round, but on ice they sucked. Since Steamboat is a multiplane ice track with 12in of frozen water (no studs allowed), I went with the blizzacks. Back to the SC...

It took a long time for the ecu to recognize the SC. It didn't like the overdrive hill climbs (about 700lb payload), and launched the CEL a couple of times for the first 200 miles. I ended up disabling the overdrive on the hills for the first couple hundred miles, and that helped avoid the knock. After about 600miles, it worked flawlessly, even at altitude with 91 octane fuel. I can count the number of times it downshifted out of 4th on 1 hand after Kearney NE, so the midrange torque is phenom. I haven't driven it unloaded yet, but will be on the track tomorrow with it.

The Blizzacks were very squirmy on the dry until the casting nubs wore off, so much so, with the 70mph winds Sat night, I got pulled over for a suspected DUI in lincoln NE. Just a warning for crossing the centerline, I'm sure he's off pulling over the rest of the trucks on the interstate.

I haven't heard any knocking after the first 600miles, in any gear at any rpm. This is with the stock pulley though too (6psi). The charger is very quiet until you really get above 4200, then it gets loud, but a great sound with a fast wisk.

Got into a few altitude races (I guess what the locals do with their F250's TD's above 5000feet), and surprised a lot of folks with the SC pull. I'm looking forward to trying it unladen.

All in all, a very quiet trip for a last minute friday night install and drive 1100miles on Saturday. It appears I have hi speed inet at steamboat, so I'll give more updates as the week progresses (on track tomorrow, thurs and friday). I'll try to ck in on this thread during the week as well.

End of Report

Steamboat Ice Track Report

Hey guys!
It's been a full 2 weeks since the Kazuma install, already have logged 4000 miles, including almost 900 ice track miles. Here's the update report.

The blizzack ice tires are the eticket ride for ice and snow. They were much quieter than I expected, and the grip on ice was excellent. My truck was the only big dog amongst 22 audi quattro turbo cars, but the SC was a great equalizer at 7200ft. Without question, the 80 was the fastest vehicle on the track, chasing down all the others, including a LT1 equipped quattro, and a 430ATWHP quattro as well.

I tried the VC center with abs, and found it to be quite predictable, but the abs didn't handle the left foot braking and massive slides too well. I ended up running center diff locked all the time, and the truck was much more stable in turning and braking.

The torque of the SC really works well with the ECT in power mode, and my only real issue was my left foot braking causing the cheap pads to fade after about 40minutes of running.

I did have some issues with the fan Dan, but what I discovered was that the fan blades actually suck themselves into the radiator above 4500rpm. I ended up having to get a couple of the rows cut and blocked. The fan clipped a couple of the blades, and to keep going, we clipped to the shortest of the 2 nicked blades, then did the same 180 to the other side - worked like a charm. I made the mistake of ordering a new fan, which worked fine until I hit 5000rpm, then it sucked itself into the radiator. I ended up just pulling the fan all together and have run the last 1200 miles without it. Temps have never waivered, on track or highway. I haven't decided if I want to go electric, or replace the fan with the TRD unit...

Big discovery: Anytime I put Shell premium into the truck, she immediately bucked and snorted until I put in some other brand premium. Vpower isn't SC power? Go figure.

In terms of track handling, I'll probably be putting in a rear locker, since the balance between throttle on oversteer and throttle off understeer was so dramatic. Sliding around a multiplance ice track at 50-70mph, made for some interesting chassis dynamics. Left foot braking helped a bit, but things could still get a little hairy at all out bonzo driving. I also tried varying the effective spring rates with the air bags, and found that running them with virtually no pressure made for the best handing.

Interesting to note that there were several of the Bridgestone Winter Ice Track Instructors about, with no less than 5 of them SC equipped (mostly 4R tho). Needless to say, the 80 got a lot of attention flying around the track. All commented that the SC in my truck was much quieter than any of theirs, maybe I just got a good one.

Nary a hiccup from the engine, even runniing 91 octane at 7200feet. On Thursday, we hooked up the video camera and did some chases of the LT1 quattro, and the footage is awesome. I'll try to get some of it up on a site in the next week or so.

Still digesting how well the FZJ80 handled the ice track. Everyone was surprised how fast it lapped the track, and being one of the few with an autobox, it was the most relaxing at speed performance driving I've ever done.

Without question, the kazuma did everything I expected it to, and is an awesome upgrade to an otherwise underpowered tank.

Wow  This is something I'd like to see. I've never seen this type of auto racing before. When you come back home, I need to see your rig and the video. Going 50-70 mph on ice

As I recommended earlier I suggest a 16361-65020 fan blade from a 93-94 V6 truck.

Steamboat Pictures

Here's a couple of the shots at the track, hope these pics work. 9 turn multiplane track ~1.2 miles long, 12 in of ice underfoot. I only got one set of shots so far, more to follow. Coming up the straight at ~60mph or so....

A couple more pics

Last 2 of the LC in this batch... Chasing down the 92 ProRally National Champion in his turbo S6 quattro at the end of the straight, dual scandanavian flicks at about 45mph. And one of the 'green' carnage prior to the radiator pull at 7350feet and 2 degrees above zero...
