Nomis, last year we had two quattros from Orlando, this year only 1, but they religiously make the trip out for the event. Not sure what they do with blizzacks for the other 355days...

I just put it in 2 weeks ago, the computer has barely recognized it has an SC attached to the motor! That said, I'd really like to go to the 8psi pulley, so I know more fuel is in order. I'm probably going to baseline what's in there now, and calculate what more is needed. I'm pretty confident that the fuel is close, so a set of injectors, and/or fuel pressure regulator and/or an aux fuel rail should solve the problem. I'm still not excited about a flapper MAF, so that will be my biggest hurdle I suspect.

Thanks for the side post on the tires! I have been considering snow tires for my lx. I love studded $$$ Hakkapeliitta's but am open to cless expensive tires. How miles would guess out of the blizzacks? I had blizzack WS-50?, they bit the dust too quick, less than 15K miles. My studded Hakkapeliitta's on my DD have about 35K and are not far from replacement.

Interesting and surprising results on your racing. I would never have guessed an 80 chasing down audi quattro's in the snow! What do you think was your advantage was over the audi quattros? Hard to think it was power to weight.

The blizzacks won't last long in "ice" mode, they just become all seasons once the gummy stuff is gone. I plan on just running them till they die, and pick up another set for next year.

Advantage: SC torque, autobox, wheel travel, and a bit of the nut behind the wheel. Ice doesn't favor HP, but getting grip and back up to speed is key. The autobox allowed me to left foot brake much more leisurely than with the manual quattros (all quattros at this event were 5 or 6 speed manuals). A soft suspension with massive wheel travel helps keep the tires on the ground which is key to avoiding spin up. I also have a lot of prorally and rallycross experience (25years worth) that allows a bit of the old dog having a few tricks to help whip the youngins....

Several of the quattro guys commented how the truck didn't look or feel fast, until you realized what was getting chased down by that TJM... Next year, my plan is to bring both the LC and my quattro and do a much better comparo. I certainly plan on making sure the q has a lot of wheel travel to even the comparo a bit.

My only wish was a rear locker (most of the q's had them), since on lift throttle, you get a bit more oversteer with the dragging tire. The LC really was tough to keep in an oversteer condition with throttle modulation.

Chasing S6 Turbo Quattro on the turn like that without lowering suspension, rigid shock, beefy sway bars, bushing..etc you'll flip the 80s just like that (easy).

I've been up on two in racing and offroading both, never flipped one (knock on fake wood). Don't forget LXE that Toyota sponsors the Corporate Winter Driving School with Bridgestone, and has for some 10years now. At least half of that school's fleet are and have been bone stock 4runners with complete newbies behind the wheel (school adds ABS disable switch and Blizzacks only). With 12 inches of ice underfoot, a lot of sliding happens. Hit a bank, one big boof. No flippers.

The reason this school has such a high rate of success and has 3 tracks that are booked a year in advance (and track rental costs a fortune)? Safety. It's not even mandatory to wear helmets (I require them at my event, but more for head protection when you step on the track)

You really want to see wild? You should watch the Haliburton guys doing all this with trailers attached!

I have put this event on for 3 years now myself. It's the closest to rally without it's inherent risks in learning.

The GQ is the equivelent of level 5 of the corporate. We require either a 1/2 day program (level II recommended) or equivalent to run in our group, the skill set level is so high.

I have put several friends, my own wife and mom, and anyone else that even thinks they are good drivers, thru this school. Ice driving is a skill that you will use for a lifetime, and is most likely to save your life someday.

No studs are allowed at any of the 3 tracks here. Really makes you appreciate the Blizzack ice tires and the Hakka RSi

Hmmmm, I miss my S4 Avant... I can see the look on some of those newbie Quattro faces... reading off the time of that big ole SUV that just smoked their (time) around the course. Nice... :D
 
Kazuma Pics

Here's some pics of the Kazuma install (minus the ugly radiator and fan carnage). Extending the 'what did I do this weekednd' thread a bit... Like maybe get all the various bolts and screws we used to terminate some of the vacuum routing when we did the install. Should have done a before and after, something like 8 various sized bolts were removed. Truck runs much better with all that hooked up.

Notice too, my buddy who lost the front bumper on his audi v8 left his old one in my back yard after the swap. Hey, big sounding horns with wiring harness and bracket! 15 minutes later...

Boost Guage Install - Bling Bling

Removed emergency flasher and put it down below to the left of the rear heater fan. 1.5inch VDO guage in place of the emergency flasher. Probably would have saved a lot of time if I put it over to the left of the steering wheel. But what fun is boost if you can't share it?

Bigger pic and Boost profile impressions

Here's a bigger shot of the install. I'm only 1 day into it, and my observations are not what I expected, but I'm a turbo guy. First, the guage itself is bling, but it has no light, so I went with the white face guage, which has a really high contrast, esp at night. VDO also makes one that's black with red pointer, which would probably be less bling, but also harder to see (it too has no light).

I needed to cut the harness for the emergency flasher back to give me the room to route it below the climate control, and it *just* makes the trip without splicing. Er, turn signals don't work without the flasher switch installed, btdt. Something for the diagnostics.

Boost profile is much different than it feels. The supercharger has a very low duty cycle. You get the big hits in second gear (or in the shift to second), very few in first. The times I thought I was in boost, I wasn't, and the times I didn't I was. I might be confused, but the overall goodness and hit of the torque makes the most seasoned boosted engine guy unawares.

I have some cleaning up to do on the install, it's really tight to get that guage there. From measuring the compound angles, it appears to measure as a 'no go', but I committed the dremel regardless. I used and molded DAP black silicone around the hole carnage, and it could use some finishing.

I also found that the standard 6feet of 1/8in feed hose is just enough, and finding longer sections yesterday was an exercise in frustration. Everyone had the couplers, adapters and fittings, no one had the line in copper or plastic in longer than 6 feet.

My next project is to order another one, and try to install a couple of LED's into the body for lighting.

I also suspect that with some wastegate tuning, it's possible to get more on boost time and adjust it's application.

This mod is not for the faint of heart, once you start at the flasher switch, you're committed to making it work. An easier spot would be the locker blank (if not locker equipped), which would probably take 5 minutes, or recess into one of the switchblanks below the DS vent. But again, I wanted to share the bouncing needle.
